My fella suggested going to the mall because he had a gift card and needed to replace his tea kettle, so off we went to Posh Park Mall and into Nordstrom... for you know, a cursory glance at shoes.

Pittsburgh is losing it's Saks, and while their shoe department was horrible, I'm terribly saddened by this loss. It looks like Nordstrom and a few other small shops will be the only game in town for pretty shoes.

I digress. Onward pretty! I'm in love with studs always, and thought these Valentino shoes were perfect.

Fit on the Rockstuds was true to size for me. I found them perfect in a 36.5 with very mild heel slippage (which may or may not have been caused by my stockings). I have to say for 140mm they seemed very comfortable. The toe box wasn't narrow at all for me, and I could see wearing them without being uncomfortable for a few hours. Available at Saks.

I did not get to try on the Lace Menas because they didn't have my size, but they were super cute and I think would be wonderful with summer dresses.

While checking out the studs, I also saw a super cute pair of Sam Edelman heels. The crossbreeding of different styles of shoes was maybe a bit much for me, but if they weren't peep toe (and exorbitantly priced for what they are), it would have been love.

I really liked the narrow metal heel, though, and will try to make it my goal in the future to track down something similar.

Fit on these seemed true to size as well. I tried these on in a 7 and the size felt right. They weren't the most comfy to walk in, because of the steep pitch and narrow heel, but would be great for a car to door night on the town. Available at Nordstrom.

Probably the thing I love best about my job is that we don't have any kind of official dress code. With some casual inquiries and slowly testing the waters, I'm happy to report that so far my quirkier clothes haven't raised any eyebrows -- in fact, my boss' wife called these my "dinosaur tights".

Having no dress code is good and bad. Most of the time, it makes me pretty lazy and indulge in yoga pants and tees. Despite those days, I genuinely like getting dressed up and try to make an effort at least 2-3x per week to ditch the house clothes and instead wear something I wouldn't be embarrassed to run into a frenemy in.

Today's outfit consisted of my favorite new tights, a sale find at Marshall's. When I first saw them I thought "huh. What's with the ruffle?" but the more I looked at them (and the price! they were cheap!) the more I loved them and couldn't wait to wear them.

Wearing something more ostentatious like these requires a bit more of a subdued outfit. I paired the tights (Trasparenze "Melbourne") with an American Apparel wrap dress, Express tank top, and t-strap maryjanes from Kimchi and Blue.

The tights are a size 4, which I typically need in Trasparenze (aka "large"), and they are very cozy. They are nicely opaque but not too thick. The ruffle in the back is a chiffon that sways when I move.

I took these pictures while out and about during my lunch break, where I stopped at a thrift not far from work. I found a great pair of flat patent boots there, and for $6 I couldn't say no. They are fun and even better -- insulated! Perfect for the upcoming snow.

Not much else going on in the shoe front here! The snow is kind of getting me down about pretty shoes, but Spring will be here before I know it.

The replacements

Confession: I used to own five pair of Fryes. I now own one, and they aren't boots. Every other pair has been sold due to horrible stabbing pain from wearing, and the saddest betrayal was the Veronica.

They were so pretty, so perfect... so darn painful! I wore them on my last trip to New York and ended up selling them shortly after due to the blisters I received. (I actually wore heels instead for most of my walking which *didn't* cause me nearly the kind of pain those boots did)

Since they've been gone, I haven't found a great replacement. I have those Kmart Doc/Chloe Knockoffs but I really wanted something sleeker for dresses. I happened upon these Mossimo Kena boots while looking for shoes for kiddo at Target and they are fantastic.

Perfect flat boot that looks way more expensive than the $10 I paid for them on clearance. The non-leatherness is a bit off-putting, but for the comfort and style I'm a-okay with it.

Fit on these is true-to-size if you like thick socks with boots. These are the 6.5 and they are wonderful with thinner socks, a little tight if I were to wear thicker socks. I didn't measure the calf-circumference, but it is really forgiving. There are three snaps to change the size of the opening at the calf, and I imagine they would accommodate at least 16". They appear to be out of stock online, but it's definitely worth a trip to your local Target to find them because they are on sale in-store!

Nothing like sale shoes to kick start my day. I only wish the selection at Saks had been better. I arrived bright and early around 7:45 am to be greeted by a crowd of maybe 50 people, most of them seemingly set on the shoe department as we raced in when the doors opened.

My first thought was "where are the shoes??" Then I noticed the racks that looked like this:

And of course, the sad selection of boots.

I actually really love the Prada maryjane "fakeout" boots, but they were not my size (and really, I wouldn't spend that much on tacky no matter how much I love it).

I only ended up trying on one pair, a Suede Fringed bootie from Gucci. It wasn't love. I ended up going home with nothing but some much needed thrill from getting to (window-)shop.

These were the 36.5, slightly larger than what I usually take in boots (I find Gucci to run large in general, except for the calf-width of boots). I found the pitch to be a little uncomfortable, even with the platform. Suede is almost never practical in Pittsburgh anyhow. Very cute for a night out, though.

The only shoe that *really* stood out for me was the Jimmy Choo "Begonia". Very classic and understated, and of course, not on sale. I think these will be a sleeper hit for spring. Lower-heeled, but the netting makes them a sexier version of a classic pump. Didn't get a chance to try them on as this was the last pair in store!

I've been wearing non-stop a pair of boots I actually got from Target. They were a $10 bargain buy I bought to replace my long-gone Frye Veronicas (which stabbed my feet to no end). They are fabulous and I will chronicle them later this week.

Yeah, I know. It's been awhile. I keep apologizing for that, don't I? Well I haven't done much in the way of shoe shopping (though I do have some goodies to share later I suppose).

For a holiday party, I couldn't decide which shoes to wear, and actually I wanted to wear my Miu Miu "Ice Cream Pumps" because I thought they were more festive... but I couldn't find them in my mess. In the end, I settled on these bright and happy Ferragamos (as chronicled here).

The dress was a find back in the day when I felt Anthropologie actually had awesome sales (once in awhile there's still a good deal, but I miss when they did those extra % off sales), and this gorgeous dress was $10. It seemed perfect for the occasion and I paired it with black tights to keep me warm and matching shoes.

A Night at the Opera

I have to say, for the size that Pittsburgh is, we are lucky to have some incredible talent about. Last night I got to witness said talent with a friend at the Pittsburgh Opera's performance of "La Traviata". It was amazing, of course, and I'm always excited to have an excuse to dress up.

I bought this vintage dress years ago and had intended on hemming the length. I obviously didn't get around to it yet, but thought it was perfect for my night out. The back is my favorite part of the dress, but I love it for it's ostentatious elegance.

The shoes were an eBay find that I was actually kind of disappointed in when they arrived. I couldn't decide if the toe was too pointy, and while they kind of are, they grew on me.

Finishing up the look is my favorite hold-ups, the "Lerici" style from Trasparenze.

I've been trying to be better about more regular haircuts, and having finally found a hairstylist I really find amazing for the first time in a good many years, I actually decided to stick with it (Shane at Ross Park Philip Pelusi). While I was there, I talked about how excited I am to be working at a job that doesn't care if I have pink or blue hair, and he mentioned that they were doing pink extensions for breast cancer awareness/fundraising. I decided to get one. I think it looks awesome.

While at the mall, I tried on a few pair of fall shoes and really liked these.

Fit was true-to-size to slightly large. These are the 6.5, but a 6 would have fit with some stretching. The length was okay, but I did have a bit of heel slippage. Comfort was "okay". The pitch is a bit more severe even though the height is only 4", but they would be okay for a couple hours on my feet. They are also available in black, orange and red at Nordstrom.

Also really into the brightly hued versions of these patent leather and suede pumps from Enzo Angiolini.

Fur seems to be so on-point for fall, and then there's my love of all things Rene Caovilla (and ostentation), which leads me to this latest eBay find.

The taupe satin meshed with the pop of fur at the toe with little jewels embedded make them spectacular. I still like the Gianvito Rossi pair I posted before, but I think these are pretty wonderful, and more practical for my life.

I'm thinking of making them a bit more showy and either glittering the satin or putting crystals on it, but for now I think I'll leave them as they are and let them shine in their simplicity.

Dinner last night with my fella, for his birthday. We went to Eleven, but his commentary on dinner was "Red Lobster does it better" (he had the seafood tasting). I'll admit, I was kind of underwhelmed by my dinner as well (though I've been there a few times before and have always enjoyed it), but the ambiance is nice and getting dressed up is always fun.

This was my first time wearing this dress, and it was tricky to wear. I don't have a good backless bra (or not one that is this backless, anyhow), and I am kicking myself I never ordered that Maidenform one before they took it off the market. If you have any suggestions along those lines that would work for a D cup, let me know.

For last night, I used an "adhesive bra" I found at Target (it was actually glorified masking tape), and I can't help but think there is a better solution out there. It worked for the night but the "lift" was negligible.

Funny thing about the outfit I wore to a wedding this weekend: a guest at the table I was sitting at, asked if the tights had anything else on them that was "hidden" i.e., "were they more risqué than they seemed." I suppose seamed stockings might seem risqué, but I thought these were cute and appropriate for a wedding? Maybe my "appropriateness" barometer is off.

I had the day off today, so I made a quick trek to Target to check out the Missoni stuff. Boy was it picked over! That's okay, though. I checked out the shoes and clothes, and ended up with the sweater pictured (size medium, though large would have been nice too), a bra/underwear set.

I'm already on the fence about my purchases, because I think I was buying into the hype, but they are cute and out-of-stock so I'm going to wait-it-out to see how I feel over the next few days.

Fit on the rainboots is large. Those are the children's size 5, and they fit me perfectly. I did not try on the adult versions because the color selection seemed washed out. I'll admit, if I did not already own rainboots, I would have picked these up. They are super cute.

Fit on the pumps is slightly large as well -- but in line with mass-market sizing (which seems to run much larger for me), these are a 6.5. Personally, these didn't impress me at all.

This line was much-hyped, and well-worth the hype -- but the intense Black Friday feel of the merchandise/shopping experience leaves me loathe to go back and see if they restock/what else I'm interested in.

Vacation window shopping

I've been out-of-town the last two weekends, so I'm still crashing from the tiredness and overactivity, but I did manage to make a stop into Saks in Columbus. I had promised my fella that I would be good and only spend 20 minutes (yeahrite) in the store looking at shoes, so I made it short and sweet only trying on a few pairs I really loved.

As always, I tried to be discreet with the shoe picture-taking, hence the low-quality cell pics. Owell!

First up is a pair of booties I am dying over. I find the ankle cutout very unique and extremely sexy. The salesman who waited on me in the store called them "cute", which I found kind of funny. I'm still pretty shoe-banned, but even if I weren't I would be a little hesitant to buy a pair of booties with such a thin heel. But if money grew on trees....

Fit on these was true-to-size. My feet were quite swollen from walking around all weekend, so the 37 felt a bit tight, but would be perfect sans swollen feet. They were a bit tricky to get on, but felt wonderful after I zipped them up. As I stated above, the heel made me quite nervous. Definitely not "city walking" shoes.

No collection has stunned me more than Prada this season. Lots of luxe suede and vintage throwbacks made me want to gobble up everything. The pictures don't do the shoes justice, but here they are anyhow.

Fit on both pairs felt true-to-size. I am wearing the 36 in the slings, and the 36.5 would have been best (my usual open-toe size), and in the wedges I am wearing a 38, while a 37 would have been perfect. Both were uber-comfortable and chic.

All of the above shoes can be found online at Saks, Neiman's, Bergdorf, etc, but I wholeheartedly recommend the wonderful sales associate that waited on me at the Columbus Saks: David. He was polite, not pushy and very knowledgeable.

The shoes I am wearing in the picture are Louboutin "She's Back". They have become one of my favorite, most-worn pairs of shoes. They got me through the last two weekends, and even a makeshift stint volunteer waitressing for charity.

I don't know if I ever blogged about these, I bought awhile back -- as you can tell from the picture, it was still snowing, but they are fabulous! So fabulous a random father shopping with his family stopped to compliment me on my shoes!

The worst kind of sale goggles

So my life has been in flux a lot as of late, hence the length between posting. I did start a job recently I had hoped would turn permanent, but alas, it didn't end up that way. On the bright side, I found a job I'm very excited about in my chosen field (graphic design). I start Tuesday, and as a treat to myself I bought a pair of shoes (surprise!).

I think my love affair with rubber is growing, and I was ecstatic to see these Melissa x Jean Paul Gaultier stilletos on major clearance. The lines on them are so sexy, and the thinness of the heel slays me. From the other pair of Melissa shoes I have, I knew these would be incredibly comfortable, too.

Here comes the caveat. I take them home to try on and get more excited about my great find only to realize the pair are two right shoes. I called the store, they have no more and they are unable to track them down. So bummed. Yoox has them, but for $100 more :/ If you see them for under $100 (in either black or black/grey), let me know!

As a lover of ostentatious and eccentric, of course I was drawn to these shoes the moment they popped up on my Polyvore search of Fur shoes (don't tell PETA). I love the idea of a splash of fur or feathers on a pair of shoes, kind of a boudoir effect for day or night outside of the actual bedroom.

These shoes make me want to bleach my hair, don a white goddess dress, and do my best at outshining the White Witch. They're that amazing.

I remember seeing the first collection of Altuzarra when it came out (online, like the rest of the plebes) and being floored at what I was seeing. It shouldn't surprise me that the collection would even further astound me with the shoes by Gianvito Rossi. I'm not very familiar with either, but I look forward to even more great things to come.

Sock Dreams

I'm sure I'm not the only one abhorring the heat wave going on in the northeast right now. With temperatures that have been touching 100 degrees, I've been trying to keep cool with the bare minimum. Now I can add socks to that.

I had a party to go to at a friend's house in the south hills, so I decided to hit up a Gabriel Brothers I'm seldom able to get to. I was beginning to think my trip was a bust until I saw a plethora of cute socks just waiting there for me, all cute and cheap from Betsey Johnson. I can't wait to wear them, now I'm just trying to figure out office-appropriate looks for these gems. Perhaps that may be another post... just how I am able to work these into my wardrobe.

The star socks seem to be the easiest to break out, but for now I may be relegating these to only peeking out of pants.

I am picturing these "Peekabo" socks with a modest heel or flats and a black babydoll dress. Might as well relive my youth. DSW has them here.

Thrift-store Louboutins?

Yeah, I couldn't believe my eyes, either. There I was waiting in line at a local thrift and I saw a pair of "Christian Louboutin" heels behind a glass case. I asked the lady behind the counter if she could show them to me. They looked fake from first glance, but I'm not an expert and I wanted a closer look.

She asked me how much I thought they were, I said "I don't know? $150? They look fake." When she told me they were marked "$450" I commented you could get an authentic pair brand new for not much more, but it's neither here nor there anyhow.

So apparently, as the story goes, whomever donated these tried to sell them on eBay for $1,000 and was unable to get any bids (probably because her listing was taken down for being counterfeit shoes), so the person in question donated them.

Out of curiosity, I took spy pics and had them authenticated on tPF. Fake, of course. I can always count on those ladies.

Post Script: Idgaf if you buy/wear fakes, honestly. What I feel bad for is people getting duped into buying crap quality items for not-so-cheap prices.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Yep, that time of year again. I hadn't had a chance to stop by the infamous Anniversary Sale until this weekend, but lots of great shoes up for grabs. Of course, instead of the sale shoes, I was instantly drawn to the ones that *weren't* on sale, but that's okay.

Of the two sale shoes I liked best online, I was disappointed by the "Peyton" shoe from Sam Edelman. I've really been wanting a wool heel to wear with dresses this fall/winter to replace a pair I have that's too big, but I found these just a little bit too pointy. The material and execution of these shoes were great otherwise if you are into a pointy toe.

Fit on these is true-to-size (I am wearing the 7.5 in the picture and they are a bit big), and the comfort seemed very decent for the height. They are available in Grey as pictured and black patent here.

Next up is Enzo Angiolini "Mistle". The colorways available for this shoe are what really makes it, beyond the lovely corset/bow detailing in the back. I loved the purple best, but tried on the black because it was on display in my size. The taupe patent is really stunning as well.

Fit on these is true-to-size, though a bit narrow in the toe box, in my opinion. These are the 6.5 and the length was great. I think they would maybe need broken in a bit for comfort. Other colorways besides those mentioned are grey wool and leopard pony hair. They are available here.

I didn't see them in-store, but I'm also loving Cole Haan's "Air Violet" boot with lace-up detailing and a suede inset. I tried on the pump version, but they just didn't have the same cachet as the boot. I'm not sure how much wear I'd get out of suede in these winters, but they sure look gorgeous.

I didn't get to try them on since they weren't in-store, but most Cole Haan shoes run slightly small for me. I would order these in a 7.5 were I inclined to get them. The boots are available in limited sizes here.

I had a fabulous day yesterday and treated myself to a (practically FREE, thanks to groupon!) showing of Harry Potter in 3D. It was wonderful of course. While I was out and about I tried on some shoes at DSW.

My favorite try-ons were these Zora sandals from Tracy Reese.

I didn't see a smaller size, but these 38s weren't super huge on me. I think a 37 or 37.5 would have worked well. They seemed pretty comfy for the height, but I'm holding out for a tassled style by Louboutin called "Miss Golf". Amazon has these shoes pretty cheap, though!

Le Sigh... not mine

So I've been on a tiny hiatus because I started a new job. It hasn't taken up much more of my time, but it just seems like I've got so many other things going on this summer that I haven't had as much time to shop or blog. I'm hoping to change that, starting now.

This weekend I stopped by an outlet mall and chanced upon these wonderful shoes that were much talked about amongst friends. I texted one of said friends, but alas they weren't her size. They were mine though! In the end, I put them on hold for a day and thought about it, and just couldn't rationalize the cost per wear... I mean I just don't know that these are actually "me" or go with anything I own.

I may regret it, but there will be other shoes.

PS: as for the selection in general? Trust me when I say these were the only shoes worth writing home about.

Fit on these is small but loose? These are a 37.5 and the insole length was just fitting, but since these are pull-on shoes (and I have small ankles), my foot kept flopping in them when I walked. The way the foot goes in also makes them slightly uncomfortable, like it arches my feet in an awkward direction. Don't get me wrong, though, if I happen upon them at a cheaper price, I'll still bite!

Goldilocks and the two shoes

Hello! Don't mind my mild hiatus. It's still too hot to shop or look, but I did manage to acquire a pair of shoes I've been wanting. I've wanted these shoes ever since seeing them pop up on shoeperwoman's blog, but it was more of a passing want and I didn't think I needed them until suddenly I found I didn't see them available anymore. It's how it goes.

Finally I tracked down a pair that was too small, and shortly after found a pair that's just right. I'm fortunate I didn't have to mess with the too-big-for-me pair.

Incidentally, this is the second pair of Vivienne Westwood X Melissa Lady Dragon shoes I've purchased (well, other than the fact I bought two pair of these). The first pair was the heart incarnation, in the peach color as well... but I returned those because they were incredibly clowny in person. I also had an issue with the placement of the heart digging into my foot. These thankfully do not have that issue.

The color is absolutely perfect, a nice peachy pink with a pearlescent sheen to it that's just slightly sheer. They are very complimentary to my skin tone, and I imagine would look great on fair-to-tan complexions.

Fit on these is kind of weird. The original pair I tracked down was a 36. They were obviously too small, but mostly because the peep is very narrow and my foot couldn't slide all the way down. These are 38s, and while I think the 37 would have fit as well, I like the way these fit and feel. My toes *still* don't peep in them, though, and I think unless you have an exceptionally narrow toe box, yours won't either.

They are adjustable to get a better fit, but the back not-quite-a-sling is awkward. I would really prefer if these were a traditional sling, but all in all I have to say they are incredibly comfortable.

*PS if you are looking for a 36, hit me up before I post them on eBay. They would best fit a 5.5 imo.

My friend Sarah said it's too hot to even look at clothing, let alone blog about it. I agree, but here's a pair I tried on in New York that I never got the chance to post about.

Fit on these is small. I tried on the 37 and they just barely fit in length. They were really comfortable for the height, and the strap across the toe is adjustable to accommodate wider feet, or in my case, future bunions.

It's a gorgeous day outside and I'm celebrating both it, and a fun graduation ceremony (not mine) with some summery staples.

Not sure if I've talked about Mayle on here before, the designer Jane Mayle made some of the prettiest clothes I've ever seen before she decided to close up shop. I would adore owning a pair of her shoes someday, but until then... the clothes will have to do. This dress was of course and eBay find, and I had to haggle with the seller (who wears my size and has the most awesome clothes, but marks things up what I consider to be a bit outrageously), but here it is in it's beauty.

The shoes were a super-bargain Off 5th find when the first opened nearby. I don't think I'll ever find as good of a deal as I got on these again ($60 marked down from $600).

Fit on the dress is small. This is a 10, the largest size the brand makes... and while I am still carrying a bit of "winter weight", even when I'm not it's pretty snug.

The shoes also run small. These are a 37.5, and I could have worn a 38 comfortably. The toe-box is pretty wide on these, so it makes them very comfortable combined with the lower heel height.

On the continuation of lovely shoes I saw in New York (really, I'm not sure there's much else I did but consumeristicly gawk at shoes), I saw many brands I've been previously unaware of.

The next brand on my radar is Chrissie Morris. I wanted to check out the venerated store Kirna Zabete, and I wasn't disappointed with the selection of off-beat, unusual, enigmatic shoes.

This pair of fabulous stingray heeled sandals was my favorite in the store. I'm not usually drawn to chunkier-heeled shoes at all, but these looked and felt great on. The color combo and the glorious stingray (no really, check the closeup) make these shoes so glam. I have a soft spot for exotics, and the glittery look of stingray makes them extra special.

Fit seemed maybe a bit small. These are the 37, and I could not have sized-down to my usual 36.5 without overhang. They felt incredibly comfortable but a little overpowering for me to wear. They are available online at Kirna Zabete.

Boots and a bonus!

So I didn't really pick anything up in New York (a pair of hold-ups at Agent Provocateur and some inexpensive lingerie at Century 21), which is good because when I went to Off 5th, I also happened to pick up this pair.

Let me preface this by saying I hate peep-toe boots. Well, hated. I mean all I can think is "why?" or "when am I supposed to where these?!" The booties seem a little bit more reasonable and year-round, but boots are generally meant for cooler weather and the peep doesn't mesh with that.

I also kind of think Alexander Wang is overrated (there, I said it). Or maybe just overpriced.

When I saw these Freja boots in-store, though, I thought they looked really cool. Not in the hip minimalist way I'm always jealous I can't pull off, but just cool-kid awesome. They were on sale pretty cheap and I had an extra coupon. I couldn't resist. The best test of knowing that these were for me was that I wore them within a few days of buying them.

The shoes can be worn up or folded down (I prefer them down), and even have a snap in the back to keep them in place.

Fit on the shoes is true-to-size to slightly large. These are a 36. I really needed a 36.5 and probably could have worn a 37, but this was what they had and I had no toe overhang. Comfort is so-so. I think had I sized up in these they would be really comfortable, but the zipper area digs a little. I might try to put moleskin underneath where the zippers are to see if that helps. I wore these for 4 hours the first time I wore them and I definitely felt it. They are still available on Outnet in many sizes (though for considerably more than they were at Off 5th).

As a bonus, I wanted to talk about Sally Hansen Salon effects nail strips. I was skeptical of these, and worried they would look tacky on, but I LOVE them! I bought the laced-up and misbehaving (bogo at Rite-Aid). They took awhile to put on (maybe 20 minutes), but they were very easy to work with and the kit has long enough nail strips to do two applications. It's only been one day, so I will report back how long these have lasted me when they start to chip.

Ruia Shoes

While I was window-shopping in Soho, I came across the cutest shoe store, Ruia (65 Mercer Street) -- full of brands I'd never heard of!

From my view on the street, I spied a pair of gorgeous lace booties. I stopped in my tracks and headed straight inside to get a closer look. Upon closer inspection, I could tell I was in for a treat.

The sales associate I spoke with mentioned that these brands are all quite popular in Europe, and the owner wanted to bring a bit of the European class to the US. I was astounded by the quality and detailing on shoe offerings.

My favorite pair in the store was the very pair that caught my eye from the street. From designer Lislie Yeung, these are certainly one of the more unique pairs I've had the chance to see.

I am a sucker for anything lace, and I loved the overlay that zippered in the back.

I only got the chance to try on the Chantilly bootie, but the sizing was true-to-size (I took a 37). The pitch was a little steep for me, but it was difficult to gauge comfort since I had been walking around all day.

Back from the Big city

So my trip was fabulous, as expected. I got to see some lovely people I've met before, and some great new faces to add to my circle of friends. There is too much to document in one posting, so for the first one I will just feature my purpose of the trip - hang out with my fellow shoe lovers.

I arrived a day earlier than the meetup, and had a great shopping buddy in my friend Jan. We weren't sure what stores we would get to see with the meetup crew, so we decided to hit up the Louboutin Boutique in the West Village (58 Horatio Street).

I fell in love with the Luxura style online, and was happy for the chance to try it on in-store. Not gonna lie, it was hard prying these from my feet. They looked so sumptuous and the maryjane style made the height really secure. In the end, 140mms are just not practical for my everyday life, so here's hoping they pop up on sale or eBay for a decent price.

These were fairly true-to-size for me. I tried on the 37, and while they felt a bit big, I'm not sure if that was because I had been walking around since 6:30 that morning. I would want to try them on again when my feet aren't swollen, but I would feel confident ordering either a 36.5 or 37. The comfort was decent for the height, but again, being 140s the comfort wasn't amazing.

Since none of the styles were really wowing me, I decided to instead try on the 'wilder' pairs. This was my favorite by far, the Pigalili. I cannot walk in 120s without a platform, and I definitely cannot walk in these death-traps, but lawdy they pretty.

The Pigalili combines sassy spikes with refined crystals. The flashy gold specchio heel ties them all together. Personally, the gold is a bit much for me. I think some celebrity could wear them with a panache I don't have. The black was much more subdued, but they didn't have my size.

The sizing on the 120 pigalle is huge. These were the 36.5s and as you can see they are big on me. I would need a 36, however the sides cut SO low that my foot was spilling out. This really isn't a style that works well on me (in 120, I love the 100s), but there's no denying their sex appeal.

On Saturday, my lovely shoe pals and I headed to several stores, and nearing the end of our tour at the Madison Louboutin boutique (965 Madison Avenue). There was quite a large group of us, but some of us posed in a "shoe circle" of sorts. I'm in the blue leopard pair.

I scaled down my travel bag to contain 3 pairs of shoes (plus one I wore there and back), and 6 outfits. I didn't end up wearing everything, but I was pretty happy with my choices. This is what I wore on Friday. I will document the other outfits with the other New York installments.

Last night I had a wonderful time seeing a hilarious one-woman show called "Phone Whore". I don't go to the theater nearly enough, and I was glad to get out for this. Cameryn Moore was quite the charmer both on the stage, and afterwords when she invited the audience to join her at a local diner.

Theater always calls for a bit of primping, so I wore a favorite Rami Kashou dress. And not to be all "I liked him before Project Runway," but this dress was from when LetrainBleu carried his line. I wish I had gotten more of his pieces because his older stuff was really gorgeous and so rarely pops up on eBay.

The shoes were of course an eBay find, as mentioned here. They were quite a hit last night paired with the dress.

I probably shouldn't have stayed up quite so late last night because.... I'm headed off to the Big Apple tonight for a weekend filled with good food, great shopping, and fabulous ladies.

I'm beyond excited -- even if the use of Megabus is daunting ($2.50 round-trip tickets? I couldn't pass it up), and there is always the worry about hotels (3.5 star for $80ish per night, Pricelined).

With my trip in mind, I said goodbye to two pairs of shoes, making room for whatever may come home with me both in my bank account and my closet.

It pained me greatly to list the first pair. I've been trying to add more cool flats to my wardrobe, since I seem to have far too many heels. They were a one-off eBay find, and I had hoped the sizing would be okay. When they arrived, I was really sad to see they fit me weirdly. The length was okay, in theory, and the toe-box was wide enough... but the shoes kind of upturned at the end? They were definitely too small and squished my poor little tootsies. On the bright side, I have the heel version of these, so I can't be too upset.

The second pair should have been a no-brainer for me. Even though they fit perfectly (true-to-US-size), I have three pair of nude shoes. Why do I need three pair of nude shoes? It's fairly obvious I don't, but I still I hemmed and hawed, thinking I could do a DIY with these. In the end I decided to part with them and bling another pair of shoes I own.

I'm not sure what I'll bring home from New York. I may not bring home anything, but it's kind of liberating and refreshing thinking about the buffer I made in case I want to take more than a peek at the shoe selection there.

Mix and match, or I have great friends part deux

I'm not really an oxford kind of girl, but once awhile there's nothing like a good saddle shoe. A saddle shoe with lace? Well, color me sold.

The Bass loves Rachel Antonoff collection is a girly, fun take on the staple shoe. Perfect for Spring and Summer, and I think will be fabulous as I break out the vintage dresses.

These shoes were made possible with the help of my wonderful friend Sarah, of Motion and Heart. Not only did she help me get these, but as many things in fashion, she turned my eye to this collection in the first place.

So the shoes! It's not obvious from pictures online that I've seen, but the whites are actually more of a cream patent leather. The alternating parts are white leather covered with intricate black lace. I can't wait to wear them!

As a bonus, I am showcasing the lovely shoes with a pair of tights I couldn't pass up as well. I love the cheeky House of Holland designs, and these are no slouch. Please note, their "one size" is ridiculously small.

Fit on these seems true-to-size. I sized up a half size to 7.5 to allow for socks, but I think a 7 would have been perfect since I generally don't wear thicker socks in the warmer months. Comfort is really great! I'm a little worried about getting these dirty, so I don't foresee wearing them on mile-long walks, but I can tell they will be comfortable for all-day wear.

More green, less money

While at the outlets trying on a bunch of fabulous shoes, the first pair that caught my eye were a pair I'd actually reviewed (and loved) in September.

When reviewing my heels, I've noticed I don't have a lot that are under 4", or can be worn comfortably all day. I think these shoes meet those requirements, and are stylish to boot. It helps that they were steeply discounted and I had an extra coupon.

These are suede, which I typically reserve for cooler weather, but I think the brighter color lends itself to year-round wear. I can wait to break these out with vintage dresses!

A day at the outlets

Nothing says "Spring Break" like shoe shopping, right? Or maybe that's just how I am enjoying a nice day off from my usual routine. I haven't been outlet shopping in at least six months (maybe even a year) so I decided to make a venture there with my sweetie in tow. (Him? not so psyched on the shopping, but that's okay!)

I so rarely have someone shopping with me that it was a very nice treat to not have to take my own pictures. I tried on a zillion shoes, since the closest Off 5th to me is about 40 minutes away, and I wanted to get more bang for my buck!

The favorite pair of the day, that I didn't actually buy, were these boots from Proenza Schouler. I really loved the idea of them -- a backless boot with straps. The execution even felt amazing to me, but I didn't want to spend the money (they were still pretty expensive) on brown shoes. If they were black I might have gotten them just because they were awesome and so ridiculously comfortable.

I tried on the 37.5, and as you can see in the picture they are pretty big on me, especially around my ankles. I think the 37 might still have been a little big, but I like a lot of "toe room" in boots. They are available at Endless, but I would check around other Saks outlets because they are still nearly full-price. La Garconne has a similar pair in a high-wedge style for 50% off as well (though be aware they are final sale).

These Rag & Bone wedge booties were an amazing deal, but I had to pass on them because as much as I loved them, they aren't really "me". They are some cool hipster girl I'd like to be (well, sometimes), and I couldn't see them meshing with my wardrobe. Normally I go by "buy now, think later!" but I'm trying to keep myself instead to "will I really wear these?" La Garconne has them on sale in Taupe (though they were MUCH cheaper at Off 5th, if you wear a 7). Comfort was only so-so, which was another deciding factor in me passing.

I'm really obsessed with python (or python print) in shoes, so of course I loved these pairs from Elizabeth and James. They were a size 10 (sandals) and 11 (wedges), and I couldn't find them online but the Off 5th at Tanger Outlets has them with an extra 20% off.

As I've said a bunch, I really like netting/mesh in shoes. These Loeffler Randall "Georgia" booties were pretty cute and a really decent deal, but I found them uncomfortable. Loeffler Randall seems hit or miss on comfort in general (these are the 37).

On the fence: opinions needed

I've been "visiting" these shoes at Nordstrom for the past two months. They went on sale and I finally bit. I think they are beautiful, and I'm pretty into the mesh/netting trend lately, but as much as I love them... trying to decide how much I need another pair of black dressy shoes.

Pros: D'orsay style (big fan), beautiful tulle detailing, very flattering on, comfort is okay for the height, perfect for weddings.
Cons: more than I'd normally spend for shoes made in China, do I really need these?

An outfit for a bridal shower

Still trying to be more regular about documenting my outfits, this is an outfit I wore for a bridal shower this weekend.

The dress was a great find from the Outnet, from See by Chloe. I don't have much from this brand (or from Chloe either), but I find the dresses to be really cute. The Wolford stockings, by far my favorite pair and find ever, were a Marshall's find from awhile back that I posted about and the shoes from eBay (brand new in box, for a steal).

Fit on the dress is maybe true-to-size to slightly small. This is a US 8, and fits well, but the way the pockets and pleating are lined up, make it maybe less flattering for hippier ladies (like myself).

Lots of Choices

Pittsburgh may not be a mecca of fashion, but there are still some great gems around town. I found myself in one of them yesterday during a trip to the East End to get some specialty food items from another store in the area.

Choices has been around for over a decade, and has in my opinion, the most well-curated clothing and shoe selection I've seen in Pittsburgh. The clothing is chic and elegant, very minimalist in style with luxe accessories to match (including gorgeous Bottega Veneta woven clutches).

With pieces from Acne to Givenchy, each item seems to be artfully selected to have a spot in the store. I've long admired the shoe selection, as I can remember them carrying lovely styles I've lusted after over the years (including those Prada flower heels I have -- they carried the mule version), and the clothing is of impeccable taste.

I had the pleasure of talking with the owner Jeff Malkin, and it was really interesting hearing about the store from a retail perspective. I mentioned I was a Louboutin girl, and he talked about his first year with the store, when they weren't sure how much they were going to focus on shoes. When he spoke with the Monsieur at the time, they didn't have the production capabilities to handle the orders they already had taken. Alas, no Louboutin in Pittsburgh.

Too many standout shoes to list, I still wanted to highlight some favorites. Despite the lack of weather-incentive I have for Spring, it's still quite on my mind, so here were my favorite offerings for the season.

A sumptuous black leather wedge sandal from Givenchy. The width of the straps and height of the shoe seemed just perfect. They looked like a great go-to wedge for the Summer.

The Acne snake-embossed wedge sandal was a cool kid's cross-breed of sandal and bootie. I could see these toughening up any outfit.

And, of course, I'm always drawn in by pretty. These Lanvin bow espadrilles are exactly that.

Business in the front, party in the back

I know all my posts are like "this took me forever to track down!" And it's true, a lot of my stuff does take me awhile. Some of it is that items sell out before they make it to sale, and others even when they do go on sale, it's still out of reach for me.

This lovely number from Kimberly Ovitz falls in the former category, but probably the latter as well even if it had gone on sale (as far as I know, it sold out in most shops before it could make it there).

Months and months of eBay stalking, and this showed up in my size. I'm so happy with it. Back detailing isn't unique in itself, but I love the way this was done, with the exposed zipped and intricate strips of fabric. The material feels delicious.

Undergarments are tricky with this dress, but thankfully it's got it's own Spanx-like qualities, via the way it hugs. I need to figure out the bra situation, though. I was thinking one of those Maidenform backless bras. Hopefully I can find one in person to try on without resorting to ordering online.

Fit is a bit small, but the nature of the dress is to be very tight, so I don't think sizing up would have worked well (this is a US 8). The straps in the back are pretty snug, that is my only qualm with this size. The length is perfect, but I am only 5'2".

After seeing how well made and awesome this dress is, I'd definitely like to find more from Kimberly Ovitz.

Situations wanted

Had a quick twirl around Nordstrom today and these shoes were the brightest stars I saw, Jeffrey Campbell "Situation". A gorgeous two-toned shoe with a pretty bow, they looked perfect with the tights I happened to be wearing.

The color in-person is much closer to that of the first picture, a really warm, buttery caramel. A very nice lady-like heel, perfect for year-round wear. They come in two other colorways on the Nordstrom website (pink/black and grey/white), found here.

The tights were a Marshall's find recently, by my favoritest brand Trasparenze. I love that they give a kind of "leggings" look but are closed-toe nylons. They are great for the transition weather in which i kind of want the look of bare feet, but my feet are still pretty cold!

Fit on the shoes is true-to-size. I tried on the 6.5 out of laziness, and would have needed a 7. They are lower-heeled so the comfort was higher than normal for heels, but being patent, I think these would need "broken in" a bit to make them more comfortable.

That J. Crew dress I ordered arrived. It's a bit on the uh, small side. I bought it specifically because I wanted a green dress to match my green shoes, but I ended up swapping out the matchy-matchy for leopard after seeing a beautiful picture on the Net-A-Porter site showing leopard shoes with a green dress.

I decided to wear it to see the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's "A Gershwin Fantasy". The performance by the ballet company was amazing (though I didn't appreciate the video or the band beforehand -- I would have preferred a longer dance portion of the night).

The shoes I paired it with were another eBay find from last year. I love a good leopard shoe, and the bow detail on these make them extra special. They are named Miss Bunny, after the Playboy bunnies, and are from 2008 (They also came in black/gold patent).

Afterwords, friends were getting together for karaoke bowling. We stopped by, but didn't get a chance to bowl because we arrived much later than everyone else and there wasn't a free lane. I didn't let this stop me from getting a "bowling" picture though!

Even though the dress was a bit small (I ordered the 10 Petite, and I think a 10 regular would have been better), and it was "free" with a gift card, I still was determined to make it work because it's really gorgeous in person. It's a perfect silk/cotton mix. Just enough cotton to make it less delicate than silk, but a nice blend that it didn't wrinkle very much from wear.

The shoes are a 37.5, and are perfect with heel grips (which I neglected to put in before wearing). In general, for patent shoes I like extra room, though I could have gone true-to-size on them. The comfort is as can be expected for 4" heels.

Twofer

I am late and lazy with this, but I had a wonderful Saturday night last week. I got to attend a class by an amazing presenter, and afterwards I got to wish a belated happy birthday to a friend, who happens to be Jess of Consume or Consumed's husband.

I debated wearing two separate outfits, but instead opted for ease and slight "maybe not everyone's ready for avant-garde"-ness of a sheer vintage dress with a vintage 50s bathing suit as my "slip" underneath. I also wanted to break out a favorite pair of shoes I don't wear nearly often enough, a pair of sequined heels that jazz up any outfit!

I ended up wearing the shoes again last night, and figured I'd share my other outfit pairing here. This top, like many things in my closet, took me awhile to track down (almost 4 years). The shoes took me less time to track down, about a year. I actually bought them on-sale from Neiman's, but returned because I was appalled at the sale price for what I considered damaged heels (the heel is kind of warbled). When they showed up on eBay for about half of the sale price I paid, and the damage pictured and described -- I knew it had to be the same pair and decided I needed them in my life.

The pants were a great find at Gabriel Brothers, home of Urban Outfitters and Anthropology castoffs. They were only ten dollars and I have more than got my money's worth of them for how frequently I wear them.

The shoes aren't the comfiest. I think most people either love or hate decolletes, and I'm neither here nor there. I think with foot petals they would feel a lot better, but for now I limit them to only a few hours at a time (I ended up swapping for flats after a few hours last night). These shoes run pretty small as well, these are a 37.5, and I could have easily taken a 38 as well.

Up-and-coming Designer: Havva Mustafa

Perhaps even more exciting than the finished product, is the process and thought behind the shoes themselves. I had the pleasure recently of conversing recently with shoe designer Havva Mustafa, and it's clear this isn't just a job -- it's a passion.

We talked about our mutual love of shoes, and she was kind enough to grant me an interview, and provide modeling pictures of the shoes -- because it's hard to gauge what a shoe really looks like from a picture of it by itself. For me, the biggest selling point is seeing how it looks on the foot, because a lot of times just like a dress on a hanger that looks "nice", when put on there is a total transformation.

So, without further ado, a Q&A with Ms. Mustafa.

Erin: I love the designs! What is your favorite pair?
Havva: I’m in love with the Loretta boot. The spiral staircase, Buhrich house, 1960, designed by architect Hugh Buhrich, demonstrates the curve and shape that inspired Loretta, the swirling shoe boot with elements of the patterns from the 60s. It just compliments any outfit and I change the colour of the lace at the back to suit my outfit.

E: What is most important to you when coming up with a design?
H: It's the look and the fit, the worst is having shoes that are so painful and uncomfortable, that you end up never wearing them! Why have beautiful shoes and not be able to put them to good use. Its great to have fun and go crazy and design for show pieces

E: Do you have a favorite material to work with?
H: It has to be a beautiful quality nappa there’s so much you can do with it and work it into the most structured silhouettes. For example the scroll on Gloria, I adore these shoes the cut is unique and the scroll on the side just give it that little extra special something.

E: What is the process like after you come up with a design?
H: Once i have come up with an idea i like to do a stylized drawing to help me visualize what the final creation will be like and then from there I cut some of the patterns myself- as I know how and where each line of the shoe will be when its on the foot- this is what gives a great fitting shoe. Then with my team as I’m the most indecisive person we choose leather and materials combinations. When complete range has been planned out its to the factories to get the samples made.

E: I would love to see your beautiful shoes stocked in the US. Any upcoming plans?
H: As we are currently based in the London area, we are hoping to expand in to the US. For Autumn/Winter we have a great collection of rain boots with fabulous uppers and a traditional Made in England belts and small leather accessories. But some of our stockists do ship overseas- so keep an eye out for that!

E: It’s so cool that you followed your father’s footsteps in going into shoe making. Did he have any specific advice for you when it came time to branch out into design?
H: My father always says never walk around with your eyes closed- have them wide open to take in all of your surroundings, there is something new out there each and every single day. And “it’s not always what you like”- which is so true, every woman has their own taste, their own style and the way they wear items makes it their own.

Pea green with envy

For about a month I successfully shoe-banned myself. Then these shoes happened. I'm fairly new (and will probably remain that way) to Rene Caovilla shoes, having only tried on a few pairs (I do own those snake shoes, too), but their allure keeps growing on me.

So, back to the shoe ban. I still have saved searches on eBay, and this brand is one of them, you know... in case a good deal comes along. Interestingly enough, just that deal came along last week and I ended up winning this pair of vintage gorgeousness... for $17. I couldn't believe it myself, and honestly I still can't believe no one bid more.

With my new green heels in tow, I set out to find a dress for them. Armed with a J. Crew gift card, I took advantage of their extra 30% off sale code (which ends today, the 28th) and found a pretty dress that seemed to match the Mad Men vibe of these shoes.

I know a lot of people aren't a fan of matchy-matchy, but sometimes I think it's pretty great.

Fit on the shoes is small, but comparable to vintage sizing. These are a 37, and they are fine in length but narrow at the toe-box. Because of the mesh front of the shoe, I would be worried about the integrity of the shoe if I tried to stretch them, so I do not plan on it. In general, Caovilla shoes are not made for wider feet.

On my radar: Minimarket

I have long-admired the Minimarket zipper-back wedges, and when Outnet had a Minimarket sale, I was hoping to snag them. I didn't but instead, I was introduced to their bridge line -- Mini for Many.

There were a few pair of Mini for Many shoes I thought were cool, but my eyes zeroed in on these wedges that reminded me of "ones that got away" (Christian Louboutin Tigresse Wedges in the Zebra pattern). They were incredibly inexpensive, and I thought would be perfect for spring, so I took a chance.

In the order (which I also ordered a Mini for Many skirt -- which ran REALLY small), they arrived in the cutest bag!

Inside the bag was a pair of the most adorable cotton-canvas wedges, and I was even more excited upon seeing them on!

Fit on these is large. I followed Outnet's sizing advice and ordered down. These are a 36, and the length and width of them is perfect. They are incredibly comfortable, and I cannot wait for this weather to pass so I can wear them!

I know I'm not the only person who "saves" shoes (or clothes) for special occasions. I had just the special occasion recently. I knew what dress I wanted to wear, but was debating between two pair of shoes. In the end, I went for red to match the theme of the night.

These lovely shoes were a surprise eBay find. I think I've mentioned before, "strassed" shoes are decidedly out of my budget, but when these showed up million percent off retail online I decided to bite. Initially when I first saw them, I thought they might be kind of "eh" in person, but for the deal I got them for, I figured I could always make back what I paid for them if I didn't like them in person.

Well, as you can guess, I adored them in person -- but there was one issue. The seller listed them as having a 4" heel height, and when they came I could see they were very much 5"... without a platform. My experiences with non-platformed 5" heels has been that I cannot walk in them. I was pleasantly surprised when they arrived and I found them way easier to walk in than previous attempts.

They look so tall, right? All in all, I'm glad I kept them, and even happier to have saved them for a lovely occasion: drinks with friends; then off to a local ballet company's performance of Dracula. The shoes were a big hit, and I felt they added the perfect touch to my outfit.

The dress was a huge discount find from Nordstrom. I love DVF wrap dresses and was happy to have this Svetlana in my collection.

And of course, an obligatory "shoes in action" picture, as pictured with the gorgeous chandelier inside the performance space. I'm sure you can imagine the looks I got when taking the picture (obviously not taken *during* the performance).

Fit on these is small for open-toe, and especially small considering the pitch of the shoes. When I've tried 120mm shoes without a platform, generally I've had to size down a half to a full size. These are actually a half-size UP from my open-toe shoe size, and the length is just right. I have mild slippage with the strap at the ankle, but with strappy strips they were great. The comfort was actually very decent for the height. They certainly weren't slippers, but I wore them for several hours that night with no discomfort.

Fit is slightly bigger than true-to-size. I didn't know this at the time (and Outnet only had whole sizes available) but the LOVE pumps are based on the Ron Ron last (I had thought they were Decollete, which run VERY small for me). These are a 37, and very slightly big. Since they are suede and will stretch, a 36.5 would have been best, but nothing heel grips can't help!

Shoes just keep getting higher and higher, don't they? I've been trying not to go too much above 4" on the heel height (right), but I love these feminine shoes from Stuart Weitzman.

At 5 1/4" inches in height, it's hard to deny their power. Anything that tall automatically makes me think "fierce", but not these shoes. They are so pretty and dainty, a feat for something so high, in my opinion. I am in love with the stitch detailing on the platform. I think I would prefer these as a closed-back peep-toe, but I admit they are pretty great as-is.

Fit seems to be slightly small for open-toe, and especially considering the height (where I usually have to size down because of the pitch). I took these in a 37. Because they are slingbacks, I perhaps could have taken my usual size, but I may have had a bit of overhang in the back. The comfort was "okay" given the height. I think the sling factor might make these slightly more difficult to walk in, but I didn't find them painful.

Tory Burch does tough girl

Tory Burch seems to be like Coach -- everywhere. Everyone swears by the comfort of the Revas, but they stabbed my foot when trying them on (my toes are very sensitive and the metal plate was hurty). I've avoided the brand for the most part, because I'm not a huge logo fan.

Fast forward to a recent trip to Nordstrom. "Oh hey, those blue shoes are niiiiice." And then I look closer and see the logo (on the inside of the shoe). I felt a little duped, but I'm not going to deny the beauty of these shoes. Plus they are named after me. Kind of.

I didn't try on the flats, but the heels fit large. I would have needed either a 6 or 6.5 with heel grips.

Jessica Simpson shoes have kind of been on my radar ever since she knocked off Louboutin Brogues (I think she did a patent/cork version? I remember seeing them sell for serious money on eBay). I find a lot of the shoes are "inspired bys", but sometimes there's something unique.

The Ely pump caught my eye immediately when I was at Macy's checking out the shoes. Very reminiscent of Ruthie Davis shoes (which I've lusted after but yet to try), I thought the powdery pink with the black was stunning.

Endless has them in three beautiful colorways, but I still like the one I tried on best. Fit was true-to-size to my open-toe size. I took these in a 6.5.

I haven't quite seen anything like these Cheetah pumps. The look of exotics without the guilt (or price, for that matter).

Aldo shoes

I had a bit of time to stroll the mall recently, and checked out the new shoes in at Aldo. I was pleasantly surprised by the lovely styles (though some of them were very heavily "inspired by" other designers).

They had a pretty varied selection, but there were three pairs I liked best.

The Flothom, a gorgeous patent peep-toe wedge, had a cool vintage vibe to it. The nude was perfect for me, and I think these would look great with skirts and skinny jeans alike. It came in three colors (nude, black and red) but I liked nude best.

Fit was smallish. My open-toe size is usually 6.5 and I took the 37 in these and they are just shy of being short in length.

I am super drawn to the contrast of nude and black lately, so the Elyce definitely caught my eye. I love the drama of them and the cutout is pretty sexy, I think.

Fit was true to size, though I could have sized up and added an insole to make these more comfortable.

Lastly, since Spring seems so much about wedges this year, the Gayner style. I tried on the beige, so more details could be seen... but these in black were seriously smoking hot.

Fit on these was smallish for open-toe. I took these in a 37.

I didn't end up buying any of them, because let me get real here for a minute -- they felt like death. Synthetic shoes don't always feel painful to me, but I don't like to have to "break in" shoes. These shoes may actually break me.

That said, I may crack and get the Gayner if they hit sales, or I can find a similar style. (Maybe the Diane Von Furstenberg Opal? It has a similar feel.)

More Choos for you

I'm a shoe snob. Along those lines of snobbery, I've always kind of avoided Jimmy Choos. Not just because they are ridiculously expensive (though apparently less so than Louboutins), but because the styles have seemed a little bit... older, more staid. I haven't seen anything really "groundbreaking" or interesting from Choo, but the classics are pretty.

I was in Columbus this weekend, and as is always the case where I'm somewhere different, I checked out the shoes. My schedule was pretty tight and didn't really allow for time to explore, but I did happen to check out the Saks.

In general, I'm sad to say their selection was kind of underwhelming (though the service was excellent). Not a lot of the spring shoes were in-store, and the sale shoes were pretty meh. I did, however, see the perfect pair of python peep-toes.

I typically have a hard time wearing a thicker platform unless there is an ankle strap -- just because they get too heavy, but these felt perfect. Very lightweight and the platform and heel height were just so, that they didn't feel uncomfortable. I don't know that I could wear these for hours, but they felt wonderful traipsing my 5 ft area in the store.

Fit on these is true-to-size, at least true to my open-toe size. I took these in a 36.5 and they were great in length and width. I didn't even have any heel slippage issues that I usually do in higher heels.

I tried on one other pair of Choos, a nude platformed pump. Again, I usually have a difficult time wearing platforms. They are usually so heavy and combined with the fact that I am short and have small feet, they become overwhelming both in feeling and look.

Suffice to say, I was skeptical for no reason, as these also fit perfectly and the shoes themselves didn't feel like I was adding an extra 5 lbs to my outfit. The nude color was a bit too yellow for my skin, but not in a clashing manner.

Fit on these seemed true-to-size. I took my usual 37 in heels, and didn't seem to need heel grips to make them work.

And you know, for fun, of course while I was there I tried on some Louboutins since my local Saks does not carry them. I tried on many of the styles (for fit, so when I track them down on eBay instead I know what size to look for), but only took pictures of one pair.

So here's the Lady Peep sling in glitter. I'm totally gaga over the glitter and gorgeousness of the shoe, but I couldn't walk in them at all. Pretty in a rickshaw!

Fit was small for open-toe for me. I tried on a 36 and I think I would have needed a 37 just because of the narrowness of the toe box.

FYI the polish pictured is something from OPI's halloween collection. I don't remember the name of it, but it is a matte black polish. Personally, I prefer shine. The polish kind of looks like I sharpied my toes :/

Trading places

If you recall, I used to have a pair of the infamous "Mad Marys". They were gorgeous and fierce and everything I loved, but I couldn't walk in them (at all). In interest of not hanging on to shoes that I can't wear, I sold them and used the money towards unhurty shoes.

Fast forward to Thanksgiving time. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving, a wonderful lady I had the delight of meeting at a shoe signing last year let me know she found a pair of Mads, the cousin of Mad Mary, in my size for a really good deal.

I had to think about it, because honestly I'd sworn off Rolando-style shoes. (So painful despite how hot I find them) On Black Friday she called to say she happened to be going to the store and she got a 20% discount on top of the sale, which sealed the deal for me.

Fit on these is true-to-size for me. I could have gone up a half size, and they do have the ankle strap to hold me in, but the snugness of them makes them easier to walk in. I wore them for the first time this weekend, hence my talking about them now. These aren't "comfortable", but I can actually walk in them unlike the Mad Marys. I wore them for two hours, and swapped out shoes when my toes started to feel it. I would say for anyone that doesn't have a narrow foot, a half size up is best.

Please note, if you happen to track down a pair in your size -- the ankle strap is SMALL. These barely fit my ankles, and I have pretty small ankles.

Snowed-in DIY and Cap-toe shoes

I've been sewing non-stop the last few days, and I'm almost finished with a DIY version of the Kiki de Montparnasse garter tank. I've been in love with the style awhile now, but I cannot rationalize spending so much money for what essentially amounts to a white undershirt with an attached garter.

My version isn't perfect, and it's not totally done yet, but for about $16 dollars (cost of material and notions) vs. $150, I love it. I still need to attach the garter clasps to the back, and iron it to make it more presentable, but not bad I think.

If you are curious about the process, I drafted a pattern on muslin from a tank top I own that fits me well, and laid a garter at the bottom to approximate this look. After checking the fit on the muslin, I then cut the pieces from the jersey material to sew. I tried this with muslin first because I had some leftover from another project, and jersey is a bit expensive at $12 a yard to just experiment with.

While I was out getting material at JoAnn's, I happened to stop by TjMaxx to see any kind of stocking and shoe deals. You know, for research purposes. I frequently see Tahari shoes there and wonder "do they sell those retail, or are they made for discount chains?" The styles are cute, and I would be surprised if they are only made for outlets.

I really loved this cap-toe style in-store. It reminds me of the Chanel cap-toes I lust after (without the annoying logo), or a new Louboutin style called "Mago" (that is the blue colorway, but they also come in beige/black and grey/black).

Fit on these shoes is slightly big. Pictured on my foot is the 9, but only because I didn't see the 7 until after I took the picture (I'm lazy). The 7 fit big, but would be fine with padding. The heel height was great and they felt very comfortable. They are available online at Endless, and come in black as well.

Black Milk Clothing

Awhile ago (perhaps on a blog?) I came across Black Milk Clothing. I was very intrigued, especially with their Sheer Spartans. I liked a lot of things in the shop, actually. I rarely wear leggings, though, and figured it wasn't practical for me to buy another pair (especially at their prices).

I also saw they had "wet look stockings". I thought they seemed really interesting and the price seemed more decent than their other items in stock. I typically wear heels year-round, and like the idea of a shiny stocking peeking out of peep-toes. They kind of reminded me of latex, without the hassle of getting them on.

I ordered, unsure of what to expect, and then a bodysuit showed up on eBay as well. I used my eBay bucks and the bodysuit was free (still waiting on that gem in the mail).

They arrived pretty quickly, and the packaging was great. The stockings are a little less shiny than I expected, but overall nice quality. I was hoping they would be warm as the website suggests they are, but I don't find them any warmer than other tights. I don't know how to describe them accurately other than to say they kind of seem like really thick dance tights?

All in all, I think the idea behind them is genius, but the finished product doesn't really wow me as much as I had hoped. I am currently trying to learn how to make latex clothing, so maybe I will fashion a pair of stockings that seem more what I was hoping for.

Fit on these is accurate to their website size chart. These are a large and they fit perfectly in the waist (but a bit large everywhere else -- the curse of being short and thick-waisted).

The shoes pictured are actually a pair that may be recognized by some. I did attempt to clean my closet of them, but I ended up keeping them. They are Giuseppe Zanotti knockoffs that Forever 21 did last year.

The eagle has landed

I made a post semi-recently about the only shoes I was really wanting lately (and was willing to rationalize). I saved up my Amex rewards points and armed myself with a gift card for Saks, because it's easiest to order from them in case I need to exchange (as I have a brick and mortar store here). Well, I ordered my gift card, waited for it to arrive... and then they sold out of my size. I called and called for days, weeks, bookmarked the site hoping my size would pop up. No such luck.

Finally, after about a month of periodic calling and stalking the website, a store in New Orleans had my size. Eureka! I called the store, and sure enough they were there. Except... I couldn't use my gift card over the phone. Really? Really. I couldn't find them anywhere else at this point, so I said send them anyhow.

If you'll recall, I also talked about the not-so-stellar service in the shoe department at my local Saks. Maybe they saw my blog post. Either way, the shoes arrived on Friday, I called and asked if I could return/rebuy so that I *could* use my gift card and they gave me the okay. I had really great customer service this time, and I don't have his card handy but I will update with his information. Incidentally, there were 5 pairs of Louboutins someone had returned from online. Who are you?! They were all my size-ish, and I got to try on some really cool pairs.

Initially I wanted these in black, but after seeing the nude patent on a fellow shoepal online, I changed my mind, and I didn't have a nude patent heel anyhow.

So, here are the nude patent Maudissimas. They are possibly the most unique style I've ever seen, and I'm so happy to be able to own them. I still love the black, so here's hoping they go on super sale.

I couldn't help but take a million gratuitous pictures of these shoes (including with knee-highs I thought looked cute with them). I love them so much. As you can see, they are quite a bit darker than my skin tone (or than I expected). I would say these will look "nude" on tanner, more camel-toned skin, but I don't find them unflattering on me.

I ended up wearing them out that very night and I paired them with a vintage dress. I thought they looked perfect together.

Fit on these seems true to size. They are a bit big in length, but the shoe itself is pretty narrow. I ordered a 37, and maybe I could have gone down to a 36.5 but I think my toes would have been crushed. I am a baby about painful shoes. I would say if you have a wider foot, size up a half size, even if the length might be a bit long. I wore these out with ball-of-foot pads, but they need heel grips as well.

Comfort is so-so, not amazing. They are 110mm, instead of 100, and I think that extra 10mm makes them a little less comfortable than I was hoping.

They are available at Saks, Neiman Marcus and Louboutin boutiques. The colors and materials available as far as I know are black kid, black patent, nude patent and royal blue suede.

Goodbye Lover

New year, new resolutions. (reso-shoetions) I am trying to get rid of shoes that don't fit me well. Yesterday I did away with the first pair. It killed me, but I said goodbye to these beautiful glittered babies. They were hard to find, because Louboutin has changed the glitter on his shoes and made them a more refined finer glitter instead of a chunky glitter, but I am hoping I can find something like them again, or maybe try to DIY another pair to make them like these.

I only got to wear them once, to a theater, and I think maybe a lady was making fun of me to her friend about these (REALLY!). Though it may have been the combined tackiness of glitter and fishnets. In that one wearing I managed two blisters and a world of faux hate towards these shoes.

What do $8 shoes look like?

I'll tell you what they look like: AWESOME.

I don't go to Gabriel Brothers that often, but when I do I usually find something pretty amazing. The shoe selection is sometimes really nice (I've gotten Theory, Delman and Cole Haan shoes there before), but it's hit or miss as any discount chain is.

I stopped by yesterday and the shoes were a goldmine. All lovely and cheap, probably belonging in Bare Feet Shoes, but I stopped short when I saw these! I think I had heard of this brand, Anne Michelle, before because they did a knockoff of some Louboutin boots I wanted (the Nitoinimois). I'm always skeptical of cheap shoes because they stab my feet, but for $8 I decided it was worth the risk and bought these shoes in both colors the store had. I don't know if I'll keep both, but I think they are pretty great.

All man-made materials, with "leather" on the bottom and a "suede" ruffle. The materials feel really great, and in walking around on carpet in them, they feel pretty comfortable.

The socks were a clearance bin find there as well, from Steve Madden. I can't think of a more appropriate slogan for me.

Socks!

I don't usually do much gifting (or gift receiving) for the holidays, but this year I got a special treat by receiving two of my new favorite pairs of socks. Truthfully, I'm usually more of a stocking girl than sock girl, but I think these may have converted me in the freezing weather.

Both from Sock Dreams, I am enamored with the quality, warmth and feel of these. The first pair is unfortunately sold out (but I think the frequently restock? it's worth an email), but they are the coziest ever. The material is incredibly soft, and very warm for how thin they are. They are a bit more transparent than I'd like, but the pattern and stripes distract from the transparency. A bit more wild than I usually veer towards, but perfect for sitting by the fire (at Panera, as it happens. I don't have a fireplace).

Fit on these seems more generous than other over-the-knee socks I've tried. Because of how thin and soft they are, would stretch quite a bit more. Unfortunately, that also means they tend to fall down a bit. Other than for pictures, or when I made an effort to fix them, they mostly hung around scrunched at my knees.

The second pair has more stay-up power (because they are a bit tighter) but were definitely meant to be scrunched.

Long Cuffable Scrunchable Socks from Dream Stockings

According to the fit guide on Sock Dreams, the Seafoam color is the smallest band width at the tops of the thighs (as seen by how tight they are) but they are still workable. They stay up but I think they look cool scrunched down as slightly over-the-knee. Were I to buy these again, I'd try to get a pair made a bit bigger as some of the other colors are mentioned to be sized differently.

A convert, but don't worry - I haven't left stockings for dead by any means. I did pick up a few really great pair of stockings recently which I shall post hopefully sooner than later.

Boxing Day

The day after Christmas seems a time for family, but at 7:30 am, I quickly dressed and headed downtown for Second Cut at Saks. First things first, let me talk about the appalling service at the Saks shoe department in Pittsburgh (putting keywords here so they are hopefully reading). I didn't see anything I loved really in the sale section, so I inquired about another favorite brand of mine that they don't stock regularly, but sometimes keep a pair or two in the back from returns. I asked two sales associates before someone would help me by taking a peek in the back.

I understand every second lost on the sales floor during the frenzy means a possible loss of a sale, but a polite "I don't have time now, but I can check later" would have been helpful. The only sale section that seemed wonderful to me was Chanel. They were only first cut for those (30%), so definitely not enticing me to bite, but some really cute styles (and all my size!).

My favorite find was a velvet lower-heeled shoe, adorned with the signature camellia. Beautiful and a manageable height, these ran surprisingly true-to-size for Chanel. These were the last pair (I believe), a 37, and they fit perfectly.

I really am not a fan of the clog-style shoes, but I couldn't help but try these on for fun. Maybe UNfun, I should say. I know I get annoyed when people ask me "how can you walk in those?!" but I can't imagine people walking gracefully in these. They were uncomfortable, awkward and heavy (to me, anyhow). I admire the chutzpah of clog-wearers, but they most definitely aren't for me in form or function. Sizing seemed to be small. These are a 38 (the only pair there), and the 37.5 would have worked best for me, but the 38 wasn't unbearably large.

I love, love, love the cap-toe maryjane flats. These were so soft, and I had a gift card so it was difficult for me to put them down, but for such a staple, I can't imagine purchasing it in bone. Already in-store I could see some light stains waiting to take form, so I placed them back on the rack after a quick try on. These also ran small. I tried on the 37.5, but I could have worn a 38 comfortably.

All of the above are (or were as of yesterday) available at Saks in Pittsburgh, so it's worth a call to see if they are still there for purchase. Unfortunately, I don't have a Sales Associate to recommend, as everyone seemed pretty inattentive and rude.

Keeping warm

Quite possibly the cutest styling I've seen in awhile, and a way to winterize warm weather shoes. I spied this lovely gal wearing mule slides, with legwarmers pulled over her foot to meet the shoe so she stayed warm even though her heels weren't covered by shoe. Makes me want to be a ballerina.

I was a little late yesterday meeting friends for coffee, but with good reason. Okay, not a good reason, but I wanted to peruse Urban Outfitters and Forever 21, since I'm so rarely in the South Side.

I didn't really have time to look about Forever 21 (and usually their shoes don't appeal to me so it's a moot point anyhow), but I did look around at Urban and see the cutest pair of spectator heels.

I generally like the shoe selection at Urban, but I've noticed their house brands have taken over more than other brands. Thankfully, the Kimchi & Blue line is really cute. I saw several pairs I liked, but these spectators called to me the most.

A beautiful creamy white and soft black together, in the smoothest leather I've felt in awhile. So buttery soft they almost felt like suede. Incredibly comfortable for their 3.5" heel height. The conical heel makes them really easy to walk in, as well. I can see these with all kinds of outfits. Available in-store and online, here.

Fit is a bit large on these. I tried on the 7, and would definitely have preferred a 6.5. Due to the softness of the leather, I probably could have even gotten away with stretching out a pair of 6s.

A day late and a dollar short

I had some time to kill yesterday, so I spent it checking out the shoe section at Marshall's. They had a really nice selection, and some fun styles to try on.

I remember when the Balenciaga moto boots came out, I thought they were pretty heinous. They've kind of grown on me, but not enough to shell out 5k (obviously). They didn't grow on me enough to spend $300 on the Sam Edelman knockoffs. I'm not sure if they've even grown enough on me to spend $129 at Marshall's for these spinoffs of the original knockoffs, but I have to say I rather liked them in person.

I was expecting them to be really heavy and hard to wear, but they are surprisingly light. The platform is really exaggerated, making them pretty comfy, too. Not sure I can pull these off, but they'd be fun for a night.

Fit is true to size, as I took a 7 in these. The pitch is not steep since the platform is nearly half the bootie, but while they were easy to walk in... I can't imagine walking miles in them. They are available at several retailers online, but for the price it's worth checking out your local discount shop.

I also loved this studded peep-toe clog from the same brand. SO cute and adorable on, but they were too difficult for me to walk in. I don't do well with clogs, or shoes that don't adhere to my ankles somewhat, so I was expecting that with these. I don't remember their price, but I believe it was similar to the Zoylas.

Fit on these was large, but narrow in the toe box. These were a size 6, but I would have needed to stretch out the toe box tremendously to make them work.

Black Friday

I am usually too lazy to do a lot of shopping on the busiest day of the year, but I do like to go downtown to check out Black Friday, since it's never usually too crowded there.

It's crap, right? I'm on a no-shoes except for the Mauds ban for awhile, but I was still disappointed. The clothing selection wasn't much better, imo.

The only pairs I really loved there, were some from Kate Spade, especially these glitter pumps. The last pair was an 8 (too big for me), but they were darling in person and perfect for holiday parties.

I can't say enough good things about my wedding shoes. But choosing them wasn't an easy or quick process. When I (along with my partner) decided to get married, I told myself that if I hit the lottery (and miraculously become less clumsy on atop anything higher than 3 inches), I would buy Christian Louboutin Very Noeud satin bow pumps to wear that day. Then I remembered that I don't play the lottery. So I started looking at Caparros (which are pretty enough, even if they do unabashedly knock off many CL styles). I was resolved to pick up some pretty purple satin slingbacks even though they didn't feel fabulous enough for my wedding day outfit. That was until my dear friend, Erin of the incredible shoe blog Shoe Love, started sending me links to auctions for Christian Louboutin styles on eBay. After adding a few to my watch list, I noticed that no one had bid on one specific pair with a reserve price and a reasonable heel height that I could manage (80 mm). I am usually a size 37.5 or 38 in European brands but I had no clue what I would wear in CLs. These were size 38 so I hoped they might fit me. I set my snipe service to bid at the last minute. Unfortunately, because the reserve was not met, I didn't win. No one did. Eventually the seller relisted with no reserve and a much lower starting price. I won them for $50 less than I was prepared to pay. And they arrived soon after, complete with the red shoe bag and box.

When I tried them on at first, I felt a tinge of worry wash over me. They seemed to be long enough in the sole to fit my feet, but the toe box felt narrow. And on a day when I would be wearing them for hours and hours, I wanted to be relatively comfortable. I stuffed them with as much tissue as I could squeeze and periodically wore them around the house with socks in the hopes that things would stretch. Satin doesn't stretch much, but somehow (perhaps it was the placebo effect) they seemed to be more comfortable after a few tries. This was around six months prior to the wedding date. I was set to start dress shopping and was glad to have shoes.

But when I told people I purchased wedding shoes before even trying on a single wedding dress, many seemed surprised. This made me worry a bit too. Had I made a rash decision? Just in case I ordered a pewter pair of bejeweled Stuart Weitzman pumps and the purple Caparro slingbacks (pictures here). After I selected my dress, I brought all three to my first fitting appointment. I tried each on with the dress, while standing on carpet so I could return if neither of the new pairs worked out. The Loubs were the clear front-runner. They complimented the dress so well! And my mom, sister, and the bridal boutique employees felt unanimous agreement with me. I stuffed the toe box again and packed them away 'til the week of. I probably could have worn them more frequently to practice and stretch the toe box. But I kind of forgot about them, unless it was a fitting appointment day. When I packed up my things to check into the hotel on the eve of the wedding, I was excited to bring such fancy shoes with me. I put them on and walked around the hotel room the night before, to get an idea of how they would feel. And I wore the Caparros to the rehearsal dinner.

The day of the wedding was a blur of excitement and joy. And although I did get blisters from the narrowish toe box, I had band aids and was so distracted by my enthusiasm that I barely felt my feet. I did switch to flats (borrowed from Erin herself) for some of the dancing. When I took off my shoes I put them on a table and a few of my cousins gushed over their signature red soles, in addition to their general sparkle and beauty. I felt confident in my selection and was glad I went with the Christian Louboutins. They were the most glamorous of my options and well worth the blisters and the price.

Note: since I am greedy and don't have boundaries, I asked Jess to try on these shoes as well and found them to run small. These 38s were just barely big on me, and should I have the luck to be her shoe twin someday, I would need a 37.5.

Oh the Horror

Boy, it's been awhile! Not on hiatus, just busy.

On a shoe subforum I frequent, there is a "shoes in action" thread. Here is a recent favorite, taken at the Shadowcast performance of Rocky Horror Picture show. I hadn't been to see it at a theater since my teens, but I was happy to be an elder member of the audience and enjoy the show. I went as Columbia.

My erm, 'interesting' costume. I am never using color hairspray again! It took days for it to wash out, and got everywhere. I sadly didn't even win the costume contest, which had the exciting prize of a still from the movie signed by Barry Bostwick! Face blurred because I was making a silly face. What can I say? I'm vain.

On another note, I am quasi-banned except for the Louboutin Maudissima that I am hoping to get soon. You know, once I figure out what I need to shill to make these happen for me. I'm not usually a retail girl (read: full-price), but I've been looking for a low-vamp shoe for quite some time and these are exactly what I want.

I made an amazing discovery the other day - Trasparenze stockings at TJ Maxx. I couldn't believe my eyes because I can't even seem to find this brand in the US (at least around here) at regular price and to see them steeply discounted makes me beyond giddy. Now I'm on the hunt to seek out more.

Check your local TJX and Marshall's, folks! As a side note, it was also posted on tPF that CLs were found at TJX, so an even better reason to run there.

Trasparenze "Erline" tights, shown with Nine West T-strap heels

Fit on these tights is small. I usually lean towards a 3 in Trasparenze, and these are a 4 that are quite snug on me. Unfortunately, I don't think they make larger than a 4 so I'm SOL (and my chances of finding them at discount if they DID make that size is questionable).

PS: Don't forget Saks friends & family is still going on. Perfect chance for you (and me) to pick up those Wolford Bondage tights.

The color purple

I'm wearing purple today, are you?

It seemed fitting as I got these shoes recently, to post them today. I am in no way trying to show my vapid consumerism as a sign of solidarity, but the color is in theme -- in spirit. (Incidentally, it is cold as hell outside and I am not wearing these shoes, but instead purple thermal leggings and a black dress)

When Terry de Havilland 'came back' with a line of chic platforms, I noticed them on Shopbop. Amazing, beautiful. Kind of terrifying, actually. I remember still toddling around in kitten heels at the time and pretty much frightened by the toweringness of these shoes.

Years later, I decided I needed them in my life. Per usual, I decided to stalk eBay until a pair came up to my liking and size(ish). This brings us to the beautiful Margot style in purple suede and python. They're crazy, and still kind of intimidating to wear, but I can't wait til spring to break these beauties out. (After I get the strap shortened by my cobbler -- they're a bit big on my ankles) The color is closer to that of the second picture.

The suede is really interesting on these. From some angles, it almost looks like satin, but it's a really cool metallic suede that is the softest ever. These are not for wallflowers, and I welcome that.

Fit on these is slightly small. These are a 38, and I think a 37.5 would have been perfect (and I could have worked a 37 with mild toe overhang). Comfort seems great thanks to the massive platform.

Shine on you crazy diamond, pt. 2

Remember those green glittered shoes? These? I ended up returning them (and sold the other shoes I bought that day. It was fail all around). I just couldn't make the sizing work, and for St. Patrick's Day-esque shoes, I wasn't really willing to make it work.

I really wanted something in green glitter though, so I decided I was going to try to make them myself with a pair of shoes I got on clearance at Target awhile ago. Armed with some really good tips from the D.I.Y. thread in the Louboutin subforum of the Purse forum, I stopped by JoAnn Fabrics and picked up some green glitter and tacky glue. Then to a hardware store for some tape to tape off the parts I didn't want to get glitter on.

I taped off the bottom and inside of the shoes in preparation, like many had recommended before starting.

First I used tacky glue that I applied with a spatula. It was really time consuming and kind of messy. I ended up going out and getting tacky glue that had a built in brush attached to it. This was so much quicker and easier, not to mention way less waste/mess.

All said and done, it took maybe an hour for both (probably 45 minutes for the first shoe, and 15 for the second which I completed maybe a month later after I unlazied enough to finish them).

Lessons learned? I didn't tape off the second shoe. For dyeing shoes, I think it's totally appropriate and necessary, but for glue and glitter I realized I didn't need to -- the glitter got everywhere anyhow. If I decide to do another pair of glittered shoes, I would definitely get a mix of fine AND chunky glitter. I think it would lay better and have a better textured look. This looks a little clumpy to me.

The ladies in the D.I.Y. thread swear by Gem Tac, but I couldn't find it in-store. Perhaps next time, as I hear it's really nice and easy to work with. I did like the Aleene's tacky glue with the brush, though.

These shoes aren't nearly as fabulous as the originals, but I had fun doing them and I saved an embarrassing amount of money by doing them myself. Next up in D.I.Y.? Probably dyeing a nude pair of shoes black to make them more everyday. When I get brave enough, I want to work with crystals.

Something's fishy

Lately I've totally been into mesh, netting, sheer... shoes. I've already got the market cornered on the stockings front in those genres, but the idea of having a peekaboo shoe is pretty sexy to me.

This isn't a new idea, to be sure. I have some vintage pumps that allude to this version of sexy, and that's exactly what it is -- an allusion, a peek. Like a blouse with a sheer panel, understated and cool.

I troved the internet to see more of what I'm craving right now and found these shoes.

From ModCloth, "A Night's Tale Heel". They do that annoying Anthropologie thing where they don't tell you who makes it so you can buy it somewhere else. I like the silver and black combined. The open toe and back makes them perfect to me for nights out.

Lori's Shoes (a really great shoe store and website, with good customer service in my experience) has the Jeffrey Campbell "Clara" bootie. I'm not always a fan of peep-toe booties, but I think these pull it off well.

On the more subdued side is Kate Spade's "Karlisle" pump. I think these work on all occasions, and definitely give the bang for your buck. Not too sexy to be worn at the office, but fancy enough for a dinner out.

Manolo Blahnik does a lovely mesh pump that was very near to what I was looking for, until I found it exactly.

And me? I've been wearing these non-stop since I tracked them down. I don't usually love pointy toe, but I find these subtle enough to placate me.

Fit on these is slightly big. These are a 37.5, and I probably needed a 36.5. I have them padded with heel pads and two insoles to make them fit, and they are still a touch big. I had a hard enough time finding my size though, that I make it work. Because they have no structure, they are really comfortable.

If you wanna be my shoe twin, I find these pop up on eBay from time to time. There is a petrol pair currently up now from Jordan Price (!!!). Note they are 120mm which runs a half to full size large.

No matter what the weather

Times must be pretty bad when someone resorts to stealing coupons, right? If you're curious, I'll tell you more, but for now I will say that I can't imagine the gall of people sometimes.

Onto happier thoughts, an order from mytights finally arrived just in time for colder weather. All last winter I had debated ordering the fleece-lined thigh highs from the brand Plush (available at Shopbop), but I was worried they wouldn't stay up well so I never did.

This time around, I found a pair from Trasparenze. They are wool, not fleece, but seem to be very warm and cozy (if a bit itchy) so far. The band at the top stays up very nicely and does not dig in on my legs at all. I love the idea of these, because yes I want warmth, but don't love wearing full-fashioned nylons as much, so these are a perfect compromise.

They look great in person and are semi-sheer. They don't have a "nubby wool" look to them, so if you are hoping for something more substantial, these aren't for you. I find the quality of these to be really nice, especially for the price (which I think is reasonable for well-made stockings).

Fit on the hold ups seems slightly small. I anticipated these running a bit smaller as they are wool, and ordered the size 3/4 even though I fall in the 1/2 range. I probably could have gotten away with the smaller size, but these stay up well and I'd rather have the knowledge that if they shrink a little when I (hand) wash them it'll be okay. They come in charcoal as well and are available at Mytights.

Goodbye summer, hello fall

Still on the hunt for perfect flat black boots, but I spied these at Saks and thought they were fantastic. Maybe when friends and family rolls around.

I love the zipper detailing -- which starts at the back of the boot, and the ability to wear these boots zipped up all the way or snapped down. I wish the toe box was a bit rounder, but they are still pretty perfect.

Fit on the boots is true to size, these are the 37. The comfort seems pretty decent, but the leather isn't as soft as I'd like. I guess that is par for the course in boots, to keep them sturdy enough to last.

I think it's fitting as I welcome colder weather, I say one last goodbye to warm summer sandals. These blingtastic sandals were and amazing eBay score. 95% off retail. Seriously. I feel very lucky to have found them, even though I'm sure they are incredibly over-the-top. They don't go with everything, but I wear them like that anyhow.

Travel Shopping

I was in Columbus this weekend and per usual in my travels, I checked out the local shopping. Or rather, chain shopping but in a different locale. I'm bland and boring like that.

I was super excited especially to see the finds at The Runway at TJ Maxx, and I wasn't disappointed. How come my TJ Maxx doesn't look like this?! Run to your local Runway section if you have one. The prices aren't quite as good as say Nordstrom Rack, but they were decent enough on older finds that might be difficult to unearth other than on eBay.

Just some fun pictures. I was good to my bank account and didn't buy anything. They had lots of cool shoes available, but my favorites were these three. My favoritest was the Sergio Rossi pair. My shopping buddy called them "tacky", but I call them brilliant!

I'm finding YSL seems to run small. These are the 36 and my foot was loafed into this pair. I think I would have needed a 37, could have gotten away with a 37.5 because of the strap.

Christian Dior Patent Leather Booties

Fit on these seemed true to size. The only size available was the 8, and I thought 'what the hell, I'll try em anyhow', and of course they were too big.

The local Saks at Polaris Fashion Place was fantastic as well. I adored all the eye candy but somehow maintained my willpower not to buy (or rather, they didn't have my size in what I loved).

Love Angel Music Baby

There are a lot of celebrity designers out there, but very few that I think actually do anything creative -- at least more than just redesigning things already in their wardrobe. Or telling their minions to redesign them, anyhow. I find Gwen Stefani to be the exception to the rule.

I really like her designs, both shoe and clothing, but have never crossed that bridge to actually owning anything from the line. Maybe some day.

While at Nordstrom, I tried on the Glamette and Plum shoes from the fall line. Both looked super hot from my viewpoint of them not being on my feet.

I really loved the Plum. The style and design is very retro in my opinion, and they felt wonderful. The price was very decent for a bridge line, and even better if they hit the sales!

The Glamette... well yes these were hot as all get out on. I know everyone is sick of thigh high boots/over-the-knee boots but I still love them. Will still wear them. Even with my love of OTK, these were a little too over-the-top (even for me).

Fit on the Glamette was true to size. I tried on the 36.5 and the fit was perfect. I would possibly have wanted a 37 to allow for socks. The comfort was nonexistent. Seriously, these may have been the most uncomfortable shoes I've ever had on my feet (and I owned Rolandos until recently, so that is saying something). There was no cushioning and I felt like there were knives jabbing me from the 2 feet I walked in these. I know "pain is beauty" but I don't roll like that.

Fit on the Plum seems slightly large to size. I tried on the 36, and while they were incredibly snug, I'm not sure I would have sized up due to suede's tendency to stretch a lot. They were very easy to walk in and the comfort was pretty great.

The Glamette is available at various places, including Shopbop. The Plum wedge is available in black at Nordstrom online, grey and black at Shopbop, and in a delicious wine color at Nordstrom retail locations.

Mock Doc(k)

Doc Martens have been on the brain a lot lately. My parents never would have spent that much for a pair for me when I wanted them in junior high/high school era, but I was fortunate to get a hand-me-down pair from a friend. I wore them to the ground (literally, the seams were splitting) and had to give them up years ago (had I known then what I know now about cobblers, perhaps I could have saved them).

A lady on one of my fashion boards posted about a pair of Doc knockoffs at Kmart of all places, and I was enticed. She said they were comfortable for a two-mile walk she did recently, and that made me even more intrigued.

I made a trek to Kmart and was pleasantly surprised by how nice they were in person, especially for non-leather shoes. They reminded me of the See by Chloe doc-style shoes, with the wraparound studs. I wish the heel of the boot was flat, but I have a sneaking suspicion these will be making their way in my closet soon enough.

I went to the mall today to sate my new obsession: leather shirts. I had seen a very nice fitted leather shirt online at NY&Co (available online here). They didn't have it in-store, but while I was at the mall I figured I'd check out what's going on at the stores (btw -- NY&Co is seriously stepping up it's game lately).

I stopped in J. Crew and saw a sales associate with the best brogues I've seen in person. And so, like Eve, I gravitate towards the snakes. In this instance, it's shoes. Ever since the Caovilla "Plisse" sandals (which I also do not own, but would love to -- size 37) Rene Caovilla has been on my radar.

Beautiful red satin shoes with an intricate lattice on the uppers, finished with a crystal-encrusted snake. How could I pass up serpent shoes to match my evil personality? I couldn't.

Fit on the vintage sandals is slightly small. After trying on a bunch of Caovilla shoes in DC, I've found that a 37 is my perfect size in this brand (up from my usual 36.5 open-toe size). These are a 37.5 and are just slightly big, but the ankle strap makes them work great.

Once upon a time, Prada did a beautiful shoe collection with sculptural flower heels. I fell in love with the collection, and sought out the shoes. And then I found a dress to match perfectly. You may have read about such wondrous finds when I blogged about it here.

Well, I complained the dress was a bit too snug (it is, even with a corset), and I just happened to be glancing at the Outnet's 80% off flash pop-up sale, when what should appear, in my size but this dress?! It's in another color, and I'm not sure if I will dye it black or not (because in effort of balance and budgets I will sell the smaller one), but I am over the moon at this dress that fits me much more modestly. (and definitely happy I'm not going to rip a seam wearing it)

But wait! What else did I happen to come across but the very Prada shoes I wanted, in a color I didn't know existed. I feel greedy and gluttonous having two pairs of the same hard to find shoes, but I guess selfishness is just a quality I've come to accept in myself. I haven't decided 100% on keeping them, as they are a size bigger than I wear, but I will try padding them and seeing how it goes.

Fit is the same as mentioned in the previous post, but to reiterate - the dress in white is actually two sizes bigger than the black one, and the size in between the two would have been better, but I think this looks better just slightly big than sausaged on me like the other. The shoes are a whole size bigger than the pair in black, but I am hopeful I can pad them to perfection.

DC window-shopping, part deux

On the don't need a second mortgage shoe front, here are some other lovely shoes I spied in DC.

When I saw these boots on a shelf, I thought they were pretty cool looking. They reminded me a little bit of the Balenciaga wedge/heel moto-boots that were a crazy trend (and knocked off by Sam Edelman to great success), but not as intense (or high) as those. I still need a "flat" boot for fall, and though these are wedges, they have good traction and seem really comfortable to walk in. They are available in the knee-high version at ShopBop (though they do not seem to have smaller than a 37), and in a ankle bootie at Saks.

Fit on these is slightly large. The boots in the picture are a 36, and they fit me well without socks, but a 36.5 would be perfect with the availability to wear tights when it gets cold out.

I really love the brand Elizabeth and James. Nearly every piece I've seen I've fallen in love with, and the shoes are just as wonderful. I really like the snake-embossed pair of these shoes on ShopBop, and Saks had them in leather to try on for size. They are gorgeous, and finely crafted. They remind me a bit of Charlotte Olympia and Nicholas Kirkwood combined, classic with an edge.

Fit on these is tts to slightly large. I have seemingly been 36.5 in most shoes lately (versus my usual 37), and that's what I took in these with slight heel slippage.

Chie Mihara seems to make amazing, and amazingly comfortable shoes. I had the Lumis, which have recently gone to a new home, and they were wonderful (but I found myself always reaching for ballet flats instead of t-strap flats). I love the vintage-detailing on these shoes, and the modest heel heights that make them wearable.

Both shoes seemed to run slightly large to true size. I took a 36.5 in the red pair (though in the picture I am wearing a 36), and a 37 in the black pair. I couldn't find the red online, but they are available in grey at Endless, and forest green at Saks. The booties do not seem to be available online in all my sleuthing, but are available at Neiman Marcus, Tyson's Corner. Again, I cannot recommend the lovely sales associate Tina enough (703-761-1600).

I can't wait to get out there and try more shoes on. Viva fall!

Vacation (window-) shopping

I was out-of-town this weekend for a conference, and delightedly checked out the shopping in Washington, DC, my beloved stomping grounds from many years ago. I hadn't been there in nearly a year, you may recall the last time I was there for a Louboutin signing, but this time shoes were only a secondary part of my visit.

I only had a bit of time on Sunday to peruse, but I managed to make it to Tyson's Galleria so I could check out the fall wares from Neiman's and Saks. This way, I know my size when sales come as I am decidedly not a full-price shopper. I had wanted to check out the Georgetown shoe shopping as well, but it was so disgusting outside I couldn't deal, and alas I ended up leaving town early.

My favorite find of the trip is from a brand I typically loathe. I'm not sure there's anything that annoys me more than logos ruining the design of something, and Fendi seems to be a master culprit of this habit. First I'll see a beautiful shoe, sadly ruined by their ugly little Fs all "look at me, bitches!"

But, oh the ponyhair! So pretty!

Fit on these seems true to size. I don't like bugging sales associates when I know I am not buying, so I didn't ask for a larger size than the 36 that was on display, but it seemed as though I would need a 37, but could make a 37.5 work since they are booties. I could not, however, size down.

Next up we have two somethings so fabulous (and completely out of my price range) I couldn't help but try it on. Fur and crystals and satin, oh my! At a mere 3k, surely these would tempt any shoeductress.

I would say these run true-to-size to slightly small. Both of these were a 36.5 and fit, but just barely. Were I to cough up six thousand dollars (from where, I don't know) and get these, I would probably go with a 37 since there is an ankle strap.

Like many, I'm sure (at least based on the rate these have sold out), I've been lusting after the Brian Atwood "Harrison" pump. So sexy with the corset detailing in the back. Even if I could find them, I am so gutted for fall and cannot stomach the price ($1050, aka more than my mortgage -- it hurt to even type that).

I was looking around for shoes to recommend to an e-pal that had 50s styling to them (I recommended the Enzo Angiolini "Maylies"), and somehow this pair of Jessica Simpson shoes showed up in my search.

They aren't as high, or as elegant, but for nearly 1k less, I'll take it.

With the hot sticky days of summer coming to an end, I am excited to break out some awesome stockings I picked up on sale at Marshall's awhile back.

I've posted about the Wolford collaborations before, but these are by far the fanciest stockings I own. A very lucky find for a great price. It's definitely worth checking out your local Marshall's/TJ Maxx to check their stocking selection for other great pairs of stockings. I've also seen Emilio Cavallini, Miss Sixty, and Givenchy hosiery there as well. A treasure trove!

I look forward to pairing these with a simple black dress, but I'm really hoping I can find something the same rust color in the stockings.

About seven years ago, I had the most perfect pair of Barbie-pink colored heels. The heel was maybe 2.5" tall, and they were bright, stop people in their tracks kind of shoes. Well, they were, until the heels got totally jacked up and I had to retire them.

I'm usually pretty specific about what I'm looking for when I look for shoes, and ever since those lovely loud shoes from my past died, I have been on the hunt for a replacement pair. (Well, quietly on the hunt anyhow. No one really needs fluorescent pink heels)

These showed up, in my size-ish on eBay and I decided to take a chance, you know, being my birthday month and all. These are supposedly my official birthday shoes, and I have been wearing them nearly every day since they arrived. It's love!

And yes, they are really that bright in person!

I think I need to make a new blog category for every time I SWF.

Cecilia had posted about getting these holy grail shoes of hers, but in the black velvet version, awhile back and ever since seeing them, I wanted to track down a similar pair. I couldn't find the black velvet, but instead I came across them in natural python. Oooh la la. The pictures were kind of sketchy and it was a BIN auction for a good price (especially for python) so I responded with my usual "buy now, think (and sell if they don't work) later".

Well they just came in the mail and they are absolutely gorgeous. A little worn, but I used a reptile conditioner I purchased on a tip from a lovely lady on tPF (DYO reptile conditioner) and they look nearly brand-new now. I love the sculptural high-gloss enamel heel, and just the overall shape of the shoe is amazing.

Tom Ford is a genius.

Fit on these is variable. These are slightly too big for me (they are a 37.5), but with the ankle strap and the strangely shaped toe area, they don't look overly big. A 37 would have been perfect, but you do what you can with eBay finds. Comfort is decent for the 4.25" wedge heel height, but I will definitely be putting an insole to make these more wearable.

The nail polish was a quick find at CVS, and my modified Big Lebowski tribute. It is Confetti's "My favorite Martian". Not bad for $1.99.

I realized something after seeing the phrase "winsome blogger outfit" on a message board recently that this blog is woefully lacking in "winsome blogger pictures". I had some time on my hands this morning and decided to change that!

Frequently with shoes that I somewhat consider grail-esque, I see them, think "oh they are great, but you know I don't really need them..." until I realize, oh yeah, I do need them! I had pretty much given up on this pair, though, because while they did make a lot of sales, I didn't see them (in my size, anyhow) in a lot of second cut sales.

A lovely lady posted about these popping back up on the Barneys sale, and I snapped them up quickly, thinking it was "guilt-free shopping" since their stock is never updated and I've frequently had orders canceled from them.

Well! They shipped and showed up and I couldn't be happier.

Fit on these is slightly small. I got these in a 37, and would say the 37.5 would be slightly better. These are based on the Declic shape (which I LOVE), so the toe-box is nice and roomy, and since they are suede they will stretch quite nicely to make them fit better. Most people that reviewed these, however, suggested a half to full size up from US size. It's possible my feet are shrinking.

The stockings are the "Two-Tone Red Cuban-Heeled" stockings from sockdreams. They are just "okay" in my opinion. I agree with the review on the website that they are best with a garter, because they definitely do not stay up on their own. I do like the red cuban heel instead of the typical black, and think they look great setting off the red of the sole.

Ankle booties FTW

While I was chilling at Nordstrom checking out the Anniversary Sale, I happened upon these ankle booties (or mid-calf booties, really). I liked their sleekness and shape, I didn't like that they weren't included in the sale.

I didn't even know Vera Wang made shoes outside of the line she does for Kohl's! This was the only pair I spied at Nordstrom, but a cursory Googling assures me there is more. (not that I didn't presume that anyhow... but you know what they say about "assuming")

The leather is really soft on the main part of the shoe, and stretches at the shaft of the boot to keep a clean line on the leg. Generally I'm not a fan of stretch boots, but I'm really digging these.

Fit is huge on these. I am wearing the 36 in the picture, and while I like to size up in boots to allow for socks/tights, 36.5 is still at least a half size smaller than I would wear in boots normally. They seemed relatively comfortable, and are helped by a generous platform.

Unfortunately, these don't seem to be available for purchase on the Nordstrom website That fact alone is making me weepy wondering if these will make it to the sales rack, but then again I do have quirky tastes.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

I was "in the hood" and decided to stop by the local mall. I didn't even realize the Anniversary Sale (AS) was going on. (I rarely shop brick-and-mortar)

The AS is usually pretty cool. They put brand spanking new fall items out at a steep discount (I believe 40%) for two-ish weeks and then as soon as the sale is over, the stock goes back to full-price. I think it's kind of a jump-start for fall, and gives them a boost of sales before any sale season actually starts.

I walked around the shoe department and was pleasantly surprised by the styles on sale. Lots of nice pumps, boots and all kinds of cool shoes. I'm pretty predictable, and being so, I tried on the pumps mostly. Here's what I loved.

Stuart Weitzman's Stiltspump, a gorgeous exposed platform pump, was my favorite of the night. It was classy and sexy, with unbelievable comfort. I'm usually not a fan of a stacked wood heel (painted black or not), but I actually may cave on these because they are something I've been looking for for awhile -- black nappa, decent heel, comfortable, round-toe.

Fit on these is large. I don't own any Stuart Weitzman shoes, but when I've tried them on I've usually found them narrow and small. These are a roomy 6.5, and I possibly could have worn a 6 if need be.

Steve Madden Linderr boot surprised me with how nice they seemed. They were on a table with Frye boots (which were also on sale), and I automatically assumed they were Fryes as well. I sold my Veronicas (I know, but after they stabbed my toes on my New York trip, I gave them the heave ho. They went to BCO's emmmmma) and wanted to find a comparable pair of flat black boots. I liked these a lot, and the comfort seemed decent, but I'm not sure about the ruching around the toe.

I had to try on Calvin Klein Scarlet for Sarah, of the Worn In Love blog. The color and shape was very similar to the shoes I was wearing that she has been lusting after (Loeffler Randall Neve, hard to find outside of eBay). The suede is a rich jewel-blue tone and they are gorgeous in person. I'm kind of wondering how hard it would be to find a leather-worker to make a perforated suede "bib" for these shoes to get the same look?

Fit on these is very comfortable and (my theme of the night) seems to run a bit large. These are the 7 I tried on, but 6.5 would have been perfect.

I didn't take a picture on my my foot, but I also liked Joan & David's Flipp pump. I love the bright blue one, obviously, but the chocolate color in the back eerily reminded me of the scrumptious CL shade "marron glace".

I tried these on and also found them to be large. I took the 6.5. Comfort seemed nice (though not as nice as the Weitzmans).

All in all, a really nice selection. I stuck to the pumps, but everywhere in the shoe department had a few items here and there that were cute and nicely priced. Oh, and for the lower-heeled lovers, they had Danskos on sale, too.

Oh hey, speaking of losers, let's talk about these "Tassel Clogs" from Camilla Skovgaard. Every time I see an ugly shoe, I automatically think "that's the most disgusting thing I've ever seen"** only to be shocked by something even more appalling. Yeah.

If these weren't backless, I would assume these were supposed to be hoof-like. Or perhaps along the line of Mukluks (which I don't like either). The "party in the front, business in the back" makes me think these are a cheeky take on mullets, in reverse.

With "second cut" in full force at most department stores, the shoes are quite steeply discounted... but also just as picked over. In my recent outing, I tried on a few pair of shoes that were cute, but not cute enough.

First up, Ann Demeulemeester "Open-front Buckled Sandal boots" (this is what Saks calls them, anyhow). I've never tried anything from this brand. Generally, I find the look a little too utilitarian for my aesthetic (which could maybe be described as "whimsically tacky" or perhaps "sweetly gaudy").

Off the foot, I really liked the look of these shoes. I don't have anything like them, and they definitely have that "I will cut you" look to them that I tend to enjoy. I like how they look on the side angle, but looking at them head on... well, I thought they rather looked like those boots you wear when you break your foot (not that I ever have, I'm very precarious in heels).

They seem very comfortable, and the fit is true-to-size (these are a 37), but in the end they just weren't "me". (Saks has several sizes available on the site, at 60% off, though)

Next, we have Prada bow pumps. These are classic and practical. You can see how that would influence my not-buying-them. They are lovely in person, and Saks had them marked quite low, but somehow I feel like if I am shelling out money, the shoes better be as ostentatious (read: gaudy) as the price.

I've been trying to abstain, really. Unfortunately (for me), someone posted on one of my shoe boards about a pair she was returning that was (kind of) my size. I called post-haste to a handy sales associate in the shoe department and inquired about the insole measurement.

After being told the insole was "9.5" (which is typically what I need), I asked the sales associate to hold the pair so I could come try them on. She assured me they "probably" wouldn't be sold if I came in the next day to try them on. That wasn't good enough for me, so I hustled downtown in rush hour traffic (AND rain) to try them on.

The shoes in question are maybe too tight, I'm still deciding if I can stretch them sufficiently (the toe box is incredibly narrow) so instead I offer you these. Yeah there are no words, so I'll just let you look at the picture.

Foot Petals

I think I've said on here that I have pretty narrow feet and heels. My toe box isn't narrow enough to require buying narrow shoes specifically, but I always have trouble with my heels. I decided finally, if I'm going to bother to spend the money on nice shoes, I should actually go to the trouble to make sure they fit perfectly.

I've heard a lot about foot petals, but they seemed kind of expensive, and I was dubious they were better than anything I could (lazily) pick up at Target. I was alerted to a sale on the company's website, and the discount was enough to push me into ordering (about 50%, plus a 20% coupon found on retailmenot).

I decided to go with Strappy Strips and Tip Toes. I had really high hopes for Strappy Strips. They are small, and undetectable in shoes -- perfect size and shape for slingbacks. I actually don't have many pairs of slingback shoes, due to the narrow heel problem, but I had also hear (via The Purse Forum) that they help in pumps just as well.

I tried them out in these shoes I bought off eBay. These kitschy shoes were an incredible steal ($20!), from a first-time seller. They were definitely 'well-worn' but not enough to dissuade me from spraying a little lysol and enjoying the life left in them.

You can kind of see from the picture that they are not flat, but rounded. It helps it adhere to the heel better to stay on your foot. While I wasn't amazingly impressed with these -- I wore these shoes out to a museum today and the strap did stay on the back. They slid down slightly through all my walking, but never did they fall down completely. Definitely an improvement from previously trying to keep these shoes on with moleskin.

Next, were the Tip Toes. I put these in a pair of sandals that every summer I look at and think "those make me want to stab my feet, I should sell them". It hasn't happened, obviously, but I figured as a last ditch effort, I would put ball of foot pads in to try and salvage them. I didn't walk a ton since putting these in (less than a half mile, to be sure), but they feel 1000% better. Before I was barely able to stand in them without hating life. The Tip Toes are nearly invisible (since these are sandals, with my placement of them you can kind of see), but the patterns available are cute enough I don't see it as a big deal if they are seen.

I did try these inside heels as well, to see if they really prevented my foot being "pushed forward" as advertised, and I didn't really see the benefit other than making shoes that are too big fit more snugly. I will have to report back how they work with stockings.

All in all, I'd buy again but only on sale.

Dolce Vita "Woody-4" in Chocolate

Fit on the Pradas is slightly large, as I find with most Prada shoes. These are a 36.5, and I could have worn a 36 to avoid the heel issues altogether (with mild to overhang, which doesn't bother me).

Fit on the Dolce Vitas is true-to-size. I am typically a 6.5 in open-toe, and these are a 7. The adjustable straps make them perfect, though.

I apparently have a lot of preconceived notions about designers. Just like my hesitance on anything Zanotti, I tend to think of Ferragamo as "stodgy" (outside of the Varina flats -- which are timeless classics).

Seriously - I see tons of Ferragamo at the thrifts, and they always feel so old lady to me. Square-toe, sensible heel, nice traction. Ugh. I know, some day when I'm bunioned to the hilt and chilling in Earth shoes while I chastise my daughter for wearing heels I'll regret those thoughts... but I'm living in the now.

I picked up these lovelies on super clearance at the local Saks years ago, when they had this "Champagne and Shoes" event (really! that's what it was called). I may have had two glasses of champagne, but this purchase was a sober one (maybe). I clicked my heels and then brought these ruby slippers right on home.

Fit on these is true-to-size, which I tend to be in most Ferragamos (7B), though I have narrow feet. The comfort is amazing and they are definitely a go-to pair of heels (only about 3.5" tall) when I know I'll be walking a bit.

The socks were just something silly I added to my cart when I was buying stockings a bit ago. I couldn't resist.

Post Script: This shoe fetishist uses a cheap $100 digicam to take pictures with (and sometimes a tripod), but is debating getting a nicer camera for her birthday instead of shoes. I am thinking a refurbed Nikon, but welcome other suggestions.

Shoe envy. I get it all the time -- not realizing how bad I "need" a pair of shoes until I see them on someone else. That's what happened with my latest additions. I knew of their existence, but I never really gave them much thought -- until I saw someone post an in-real-life picture of how completely stunning they were.

I had to have them. (well, I didn't, but I wanted them superbad)

Surprisingly, unlike other holy grails, a few popped up on eBay at the same time after a bit of dedicated internet sleuthing. They are perfect and lovely and I don't think I've owned a sexier shoe. (I say that about a lot of my shoes, though)

I said goodbye to another holy grail in place of these (the Mad Marys -- go ahead and shed a tear, but I couldn't really walk in them anyhow), but I think these'll do quite nicely.

Tom Ford for Gucci Satin, Metal and Crystal Corset Pumps, 2004

Fit on these is really small. I'm not usually a Gucci fan, but when I've tried on shoes by the brand, I've typically been a 6.5. These are a 7.5 and I honestly could have even worn an 8. The length is too long, but the opening for the bottom of the shoe is so narrow it would be difficult to size down.

Learning curve

There's always that question: how can you walk in those?! (which is aptly followed by: how high are they?!) Most of the time, practice makes perfect. Sometimes it doesn't matter how much practice I have, the shoes are never going to work anyhow.

I normally would never go for the "make it work!" attitude, because I love my feet and lack of bunions. I also worry if I go that route, that the shoes in question will just sit unworn in my closet. I typically steer clear of pointy-shoes for this very reason (I find they pinch my toes while alternately making my feet look huge). I can't seem to say "no" to the Pigalle, though.

They flirted with me and wore down my limp noodle backbone until I said "OKAY!" and hunted down a pair on eBay in the coveted (to me, anyhow) Blue/Black Leopard patent. I don't remember how long I searched for these beauties, but they showed up in my size-ish and I set up a snipe for more than I really wanted to spend "just in case".

So I sniped, and won, kind of forgetting I already own a pair of blue leopard heels. Owell.

Christian Louboutin Pigalle 120 in Blue/Black Patent

Fit on these is... huh. They were purchased gently-worn, but they do not appear to be completely stretched out. These are "toe crunchers" to be sure. These are a full-size down from my true US size, and the length is fine but the toe-box is killer. I think I would prefer the 120mm in a half-size down from my US size, and pad to fit. I have a narrowish foot, and they are still a bit narrow on me, so I definitely would not recommend these for anyone who has a wider foot.

Comfort is nonexistent. I only wear these when I absolutely know I will not have to walk more than car-to-door and will be sitting for the duration of wherever I'm going.

Well, I didn't really. I did say I had a pair of Zanottis on my eBay watch list, right? Maybe he doesn't need stopped, just... guided?

It seems as thought when Giuseppe Zanotti puts his name on shoes done for other designers -- the results are decent. Like I mentioned before, the Zanotti/Balmain collaboration. I didn't want to jinx it at the time, but I also loved the F/W 09 collection with Thakoon.

I saw these sandals awhile ago on Net-A-Porter. The general response "those are interesting" (meaning bad). I passed because they were still too expensive, but they popped up in my size for considerably less, so I dickered with the seller a bit and was able to bring these beauties into my closet.

A friend once told me I was a "drag queen in an anatomical woman's body". At the time I was like "..." but I get what he meant: I'm ostentatious. I like blingy, flashy, sometimes tacky and gaudy (okay, a lot of the time). If it doesn't go with anything, I'll make it go with everything.

These Mirror Mosaic sandals are done in a rich black suede (even though I usually hate suede, it's a very minute part of the shoe) and with honest-to-god disco fabulous cut glass mirrors (not just mirrored material). At first glance I worried about their delicacy, but at second I realized these shoes could be armor.

So, without further ado, my "inner drag queen goddess" shoes.

Giuseppe Zanotti for Thakoon Mirror Mosaic Sandals, F/W 2009

Fit on these is SMALL. Net-A-Porter claimed these run large, but I find the length to be true-to-size, but the width narrow. These are a 36.5, and they will work with some stretching, but the 37 would have been wonderful, and it's really unusual I find I need true-to-size for open-toe.

Comfort is so-so. They are 4.5" tall with a 1/4" platform (if you want to call it that). These aren't dance all night shoes, which is a shame because that's exactly what they look like they should be.

Parts Per Million

This is a shoe blog. But my stocking problem is becoming bigger and bigger.

I posted about my new favorite brand, Trasparenze, already, but here is why they are so awesome. These stockings. SRSLY. I even have to go to TXTSPK to tell you how amazing they are. The detailing is so lush and gorgeous that these pictures don't even do them justice.

The unusual pattern in-lieu of a solid cuban heel is what makes these hold ups, honestly, but then there is the seam and the pattern and stripes where they end on the leg. They are honestly lovely.

Okay, back to shoes. The Nine West "Vishnu" pumps are pretty great. Comfortable, not too tall (3.5") and very elegant. They are perfect to dress up or down an outfit, and there's something really sexy about a d'orsay heel, in my opinion. I bought these awhile ago, after seeing them posted on MakeupAlley, but they are still available in various colors online (and cheap!).

The fit on the stockings is true-to-size. I ordered size 3/4, because I generally like to size up in stockings (I think they lie about sizing), but these are actually slightly big on me. The silicone (?) or whatever is in the stay-up part of the stocking fits rather nicely, though, and does not fall down despite the sizing.

Fit on the Nine West heels is large. These are a US 6.5, and I could have sized down to 6 even.

Hosiery, Parts IV-VII

It's getting warmer outside, but I've got a new cold-weather obsession: suspender stockings. It's like a little bit of "bad" that may or may not peek out from under clothing. A version of sexy that perhaps only you may know about, but makes you feel that much more sassy knowing the secret.

I love the look of garter belts and thigh highs, and these make said look even easier. I prefer cut-out stockings, but also love the trompe l'oeil look. I found a good selection of these at mytights.

First up, is House of Holland. These were first posted by Lindsay on a fashion thread and I had admired them quite a bit. An unusual take on the garter silhouette, with a house at the "clasp", these are sexy and unique.

Trasparenze, a brand I had never heard, of was talked about on the Purse Forum. A shoe collection thread was posted with intricately detailed thigh highs and I wanted to seek more from this brand.

Mytights sizing is pretty accurate on the website, but I did find the House of Holland tights to be a bit smaller than their "one size fits most" suggests.

Sidenote: I am desperately looking for a pair of suspender tights that started my obsession. They are the "Lucrezia Borgia" style from the brand Trasparenze, and if you are able to locate these on a site that delivers to the US, please let me know!

Giuseppe Zanotti needs to be stopped

I thought about making this an April Fools joke, how much I love some of Zanotti's creations, but I got lazy and I couldn't bring myself to even joke about loving these shoes.

Giuseppe Zanotti has created some beautiful shoes. Some I've even coveted, to be honest. I like the stuff that has been done for Balmain (for the most part). I love the latest advertising with women stepping on men in hot shoes. I appreciate the cheekiness.

Let's get real here for a minute though. Racked already covered his blingy dollar-sign shoes and bullet sandals, but there are so many other atrocities out there. It's kind of become a thing now where I can instantaneously "spot the Zanotti" by how ugly the shoe is. Is he playing a joke on us? Trying to see how far fashionistas will go to be "in style"? I sometimes think Marc Jacobs does that.

First up we have the bedazzled sandals for spring! Available at Bergdorf Goodman, for a price I didn't even bother to look up because you couldn't pay me to wear these, these are like Easter confections from hell. I know what you are saying "could you do any better?" Yes, yes I could.

The boots (available at Barneys) upon first glance looked really nice. Solid shape, nice details. Then I turned them around. OMGWTFBBQ? Why? Were they not heavy enough? Did they need some pastel-colored bling for spring?

I had a grueling 15-hour trip to New York this past weekend, where I was going to visit friends and attend a convention for hairdressers. I took the bus. I know what you are thinking: why is this girl who spends hundreds on shoes taking the bus? Well, it's normally pretty convenient, cheap (more $$ for shoes!), quick and has overnight rides unlike the train (only one departure to NYC during the daytime from Pittsburgh). Oh, and I don't fly (maybe someday).

Despite the ridiculous ride there, I had an incredible time with friends and came home with two amazing items. The first, not shoes at all! It's true, sometimes I like clothing too. I've been wanting this dress for awhile, but the ones on eBay were more than I wanted to spend on a cotton dress. Lo and behold the treasure trove that is Century21 brought me racks and racks of gorgeous clothing at steeply discounted prices.

Fit is small. This is a IT 42, which roughly translates to a US 8, and as you can see from the picture, I definitely will need to wear "support undergarments" with it.

The second item I came home with has been a holy grail since I saw them in person at a local store (but in a mule version, which I cannot wear). I came across them on eBay, but I couldn't decide if I needed or wanted them as bad as I thought, and was unsure of the sizing. My wonderful friend Cecilia, who not only graciously let me stay in her home for my trip, made this shoe miracle possible. Being my shoe-size twin, and knowing I've been pining after these, she agreed to sell them to me. I couldn't be luckier (both for the friend and shoes). They are a bit tricky to walk in, but they are incredibly special.

Fit on these is true-to-size. I could have possibly sized-down to a 36.5 as the heel slips slightly, but then I would probably have "overhang". I am relegating these to special occasion-only status, only because I do worry the thin heel may snap. I cannot wait to wear them.

Oh, and my ride back to Pittsburgh? Even more interesting. A man (if you can call him that) spit on a lady, who then decked him (rightfully so). We pulled over to wait for the cops, only to have the bus start smoking once we were on the highway. Yeah.

Shoe miracle (?)

I have been crowing about the Rock & Republic Sabra booties for months now, and didn't think I'd be able to find them at all. They were sold out, but then secretly a pair in my size showed up on piperlime awhile back and Sarah even had a coupon code for me! I stayed up until midnight to wait to buy my shoes on sale and when I clicked at 12:04 AM, they were GONE.

Fast forward to two weeks ago, my fellow shopping enabler and dear friend Cecilia emailed me that Gilt had these booties, in my size, for way cheaper than I had seen them previously.

I quickly logged in and bought these booties and waited patiently for them to arrive. Being snowed in nearly completely last week had left me thinking I'd never see them, but there they were bright and sunny on Monday, delivered by my faithful UPS guy (back from back surgery).

So... that brings us to the booties themselves. Hmm. I like them, but upon first fitting I thought they looked a bit hoofish. Maybe it's the shape of the toe-box, or the suede, but I guess I haven't let it stop me before.

My only major qualm with these is the pain. Not in my foot, even, but my shins! The tops of the booties are quite stiff and dig into my shins like nobodies business. It's so depressing when something I've wanted so long falls short of the hype, but I still think I'm keeping them. I might try putting some moleskin where they dig into my shins and hope that solves the problem.

The fit on these is true-to-size, but I would say work better on a narrow calf. The heel is quite tall, but there is a hidden platform and exposed platform that make them pretty easy to walk in.

I try to keep my shoe collection limited to shoes I actually wear, and every time I have a "spring cleaning" I glance at these vintage Nine West flats. I don't shy away from loud, but I have had a hard time actually imagining what to wear them with. With the cut-outs on the toe and heel, they aren't really winter shoes so perhaps I'll find something springy in the coming months.

The tights were actually inspired by a lady on a fashion forum. She had posted an amazing head-to-toe shocking pink outfit and I thought "that looks so cool!" When I came across these Vivienne Westwood/Wolford collaboration tights at Marshalls for five dollars, I decided to try and make that dream come true. Cheers, Helga!

Fit on the flats is true-to-size (unlike other vintage Nine West shoes, I typically have to size up). The stockings are another story entirely. I waffle between a medium and large in Wolford, but these are like "extended leg medium" (my words not theirs). They are too snug, but also too long. I don't have particularly short legs but these weren't made for someone 5'2" apparently.

Spectator sport

Many years of thrifting has blessed me with quite a vintage collection. I've said goodbye to a lot of those shoes (mostly lower heels), but the ones I kept are special. Not just because I know I won't see anyone else wearing them -- but because they have been years in the making of a well-curated collection. What? Shoes are art, they deserve curating.

Before eBay and resellers came along, my favorite thrift store was a treasure trove with vintage goodies. These delightful spectator shoes were one of my many finds after poring over shoe after shoe.

There's just something enticing about spectators. The pattern, I mean. I feel like a sexy villain, the kind that Dick Tracy falls in love with before ultimately being betrayed. The smooth lines and curves of these shoes elaborate that feeling. The era is difficult to guess, but I would say 80s, just by the look and feel of them, but to me they are timeless.

Fit on these is surprisingly true-to-size for vintage. They are a 7.5, and slightly too big for my standard US 7 feet. As with most vintage shoes, however, they run quite narrow.

It's true. I like cornball movies. I want to be Betty but somehow I always go in for Veronica. That goes for shoes, too, apparently.

Motorcycle boots seem to have a certain cachet, and something about them that never goes out of style. Add to that the Frye factor, and you have an eternal classic. I rarely wear flat boots, but these have become a staple in cold weather. I don't mind letting these boots get rough or worn, even dirty, because it's part of their charm and actually makes them look even better like that.

I loved these so much I actually bought them in both brown and black. I've since sold the brown and just stayed with black, which suits both me and my wardrobe better.

Frye Veronica Slouch, 2006 (?)

Fit on these boots is true-to-size BUT has the added difficulty of being hard to pull on the foot. I sized up because the foot opening is incredibly narrow, but then my foot slides in the boots. It's a catch-22, not only could I not size down in these, but I cannot wear thick socks to make up for the size difference either -- the narrow opening doesn't allow for it. Due to the sizing issues I only find these moderately comfortable.
